Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Loop Statement Help

    I need help in creating a loop statement for the append operation below. It is based on the 'Segment' field. Which can range from 1 through 35. Thank you in advance!

    DIM Append as P

    a_tbl = table.open("temp1")
    append.t_db = "temp"
    append.m_key = ""
    append.t_key = "recno()"
    append.m_filter = ""
    append.t_filter = "top_records(1,"segment = "+chr(92)+""1"+chr(92)+""")"
    append.type = "All"

    What is the importance of segment?
    How are you determining the loop ?

      What I am trying to accomplish is getting the 1st record(top_record) of each segment. I can do this by creating the append code 35 times. Changing the 1 to 2 then 3 etc in +chr(92)+""1"+chr(92)+. I would like to create one loop instead that will do this. Is that possible?

        I'm going to hope you have a list of segments in an array I'm going to call segmentArray.
        Code:
        for each seg in segmentArray
        <run the append operation>
        next
        Let me know if I'm on the right track or not.

              I get an error: Extra characters at end of expression when I try: append.t_filter = "top_records(1,"segment = (i)" )"

              If I were to make it:
              append.t_filter = "top_records(1,"val(Segment)=1")"

              It works and gives me the top record but 35 times. Why doesn't it take i = 1

                Is Segment a character field or a numeric field in the table.
                It appears that the variable you are trying to pass to the operation are not being read as variables.

                Maybe?
                Code:
                append.t_filter = "top_records(1,\"val(segment) = \" + i )"

                  Segment is a character field in the table.
                  I don't get an error running your code above but noting is appending to the table.

                    My thinking is the append operation is designed to append x number of records in a query to a table.
                    If it were me in this case, I would ensure the query gets the desired records. Once that happens,
                    I would use the run_operation command to run the append operation.
                    This operation can be put inside a loop if that is really the route you want to take.

                    I can help you setup the loop, but I would need to understand how you are defining the loop.

                    Feel free to contact me at [email protected] or (608) 345-2697.

                      Thanks for all your help. I finally got it to work. I removed:
                      DIM i as N
                      i = 1
                      and added that info into Define Global Variables

                      and used the code:
                      append.t_filter = "top_records(1,"val(segment) = " + i )"

                      Now how can I add another loop into the script? Or am I better off creating multiple scripts and call them?

                          Hello everyone!

                          So this loop code below works great but a tweak is needed and I was hoping for some help. I am using "WHILE i <= 35" because I am assuming we will not have a job with over 35 segments. Let's say I have a job with only 1 segment. How can i stop the code from looping 35 times when it should just stop at 1. What if I had a job with only 5 segments? Etc....

                          DIM Append as P

                            Let's try to get at the needed information.
                            I'm guessing you have a list of orders, and each order has 1 or more segments.
                            Where is the main list coming from ?

                              Yes, a list of orders, and each order has 1 or more segments.

                              The lists will are all dbase (.dbf) files.
