Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

extracting the 3rd word from a string of text of variable length

    Hi,

It's Judith again, I am breaking a variable length field in to separate fields. Madtowng very kindly helped me extract the postcode which are the last 2 words in the field using rat expression. I now need to extract the third to last word in the string and put it in the town/city field.

I have tried doing this myself but can't get the expression right.

The address looks like these examples

    195 Elmers End Road Beckenham BR3 4EH
Townfield House 27-29 Townfield Street Chelmsford CM1 1QL

Just to give my excuses I'm not an IT person but an admin person who bought Alpha pre windows all those years ago and have pretty much taught myself everything I know which might not be much compared to you all but we have used the booking system and customer crm database for all these years.

I am eternally grateful for the help I get on this forum

    Jude

I found a way around it I used the chr(32) expression and updated the post town field with the last 3 words in the address fields. I then used the word expression to extract the first word from the 3 word string. Probably not the most exact way of doing it, but it worked.

There's nothing wrong with that way of getting it done.

small governments have a way of screwing things up. Somewhere in the UK is one that has a space in it’s name.

              Ain't gonna work with a chr32 (space)
              Example
Potters Bar - its in 2 area codes
              New Biggin by Sea
              Newbiggin by Sea.

Judith, why do you need the Town?
The Pcode should be enough to set he data.

Just downloaded a CSV with zll possible info.
Easier to do a simple lookup against the CSV and get all the info from the first char block in thr Pcode

Will post suggestion tomorrow. Watching MasterChef.

                As promised, please see attached.
The app is based on my version of the postcode extract, not Greggs, but you will see how it was put together.
The zipped postcodes are from Github. I imported them and linked the first data block - which is the Town - to the first part of your address postcode.
The import Operation shows how that works. You can get them easily, but I cannot upload them as CSV. Let me know if you have problems.

When you open the app, it will show the addresses and the relevant government data based on the postcode in your Address field.

Let me know if you wish it developed any further (Pro Bono of course) but I know you enjoy(?) fiddlin'.

                Postcode from CSV.zip
