Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error opening Developer

My current application won't open from Developer, although my ten day old copy will open. On attempting to open the current version, I get an error message stating that there is "an error loading" and also that it "cannot find" a file called MenuTable.dbf

Confusingly, the path it states is on my C drive. However, my data files are on my server, where I do have a table called MenuTable.dbf on my server. I can confirm that this dbf does not exist on my C drive in the specified location. I am further confused by the fact that earlier copies of my application open without issue. The error messages are below.

    Error1.jpg Error2.jpg

(I have reverted to IE 9 as opposed to IE 11).

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Error opening Developer

Larry, this sounds like the same problem some of steve workings' clients encountered. Check this message board thread.

      Re: Error opening Developer

Thanks for the guidance Tom, and it does look like the solution, especially as the file in question is called first, i.e. it's my start menu. I have checked that the relevant files are physically in the folder and they are, but unfortunately I don't know how to start the app without the startup form. (I can get to the CP once the app is running).

        Re: Error opening Developer

Start the app while holding down shift-ctrl.
        There can be only one.

          Re: Error opening Developer

I would take a different approach.

Open the developer from the start menu. i.e. run alpha5.exe to open alpha but NOT open or even try to open a database.

Then use FILE menu to display dropdown list of choices, and OPEN database (workspace) on the server.

In Steve's case once he opened the database he found the list of tables and sets "missing". so he "ADDED" them to the database. You may find you have to do something similar.

Once you've verified things are back to normal, go to the control panel and use the TOOLS menu to create a new shortcut.

            Re: Error opening Developer

Thanks very much for the help. I tried Stan's suggestion first and thankfully the CP appeared but... there are no files/tables/reports etc listed at all! So it looks like the problem.

I then tried Tom's suggestion, but when I opened the workspace on the server it then again complained about the missing files. It let me in if I applied shift-ctrl keys, but again with no files etc listed.

For clarity, all four of my PC's with shadow databases successfully open the current database. It's just the developer which doesn't work, with the current data. It does work on a recent backup. Which leads me to think that my developer is OK, and does point to the missing files. Is there a short-cut to utilising my backup? I can clearly see all of the 'missing' Alpha files in the appropriate folder on my server. It's just Alpha that can't see them.

              Re: Error opening Developer

As mentioned in the previous post, Steve "ADDED" the tables and sets back into his workspace. Perhaps that's all you need to do, too ? Do you understand how to "add" a table to the workspace? a set ?

                Re: Error opening Developer

Fantastic news. Just 'Added' all the missing files and - it all looks OK. Can't believe how easy it was. Thanks a million for the help.
