Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Weird print problem shows 1 of 21474 pages.

I have a customer that reported the following problem. I'm guessing it's related to something else this guy is doing outside of Alpha but that really doesn't make much sense either and I haven't been able to find anything. Someone else can print the same report this guy is having trouble with and it works every time. Anybody have any ideas?

When print a report, we always do preview first, this is automatic. When the preview displays, sometimes it display properly. We can tell if it is going to be OK by looking at the page/page of field. If it shows Page 1 of 9, its fine, and it prints fine. Unfortunately, sometimes it will show the first page and it will say page 1 of 21747. If we try to print, it will only print the first couple of pages and then just stop. That number (21474) is and always has been the same. It never changes.

Anyway, this happens about 35% of the time.

The really weird thing is that this is happening on only one computer and they replaced the whole computer in late January just to fix this problem. Everything worked fine for about a month then the same problem started again a few days ago.

Gotta love these kind of problems...

I would guess that you know all of these things, but running through a list of what I try to find something...

So, does the the 1 of 9 represent the filtered report and 1 of 21747 a report that the filter wasn't used? ie like .t.?

Use the system variable current_filter on the report to see exactly what the filter has become.

Since someone else can run the same report - against the same shared table? - and it works... - it's not the table/index.

I usually start triaging this by running a couple of free malware scanners.

then list all of the programs that are on both machines to find a potential difference.

Is this a runtime app? It may be the runtime files aren't getting updated properly on that computer. Other than that I would check the script that calls this report which I am guessing sets the filter - it may be a timing issue. However when it has happened to me, it was usually my filter syntax that needed tweaking.

Good ideas all - and I'm still accepting new ones! I probably won't be getting with the customer until Monday and will try the various suggestions then.

        Answers to questions:

So, does the the 1 of 9 represent the filtered report and 1 of 21747 a report that the filter wasn't used? ie like .t.? I'm not absolutely positive but I don't think there's any way it should ever be 21747 AND it's apparently showing the same number even after more records are added.

Since someone else can run the same report - against the same shared table? - and it works... - it's not the table/index. Agreed. In fact, the same user can print the same report and it works most of the time.

Is this a runtime app? It may be the runtime files aren't getting updated properly on that computer. I'm pretty sure the user has the runtime but remember that it was a problem so they installed a whole new computer and re-installed the program. After that it worked fine for about a month so I doubt it has anything to do with the runtime update. However, I will check to make sure they are all using the same version.
