Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Strange behaviors in v9?

I'm seeing relatively frequent misbehaviors in v9. As a relative newbie, I find myself committing quite a few 'oops' operations (meaning that I did something I didn't mean to do). One example today was in building a set, 5 tables deep. After saving the set, I realized the two "bottom" tables were the wrong ones. So I unlinked them. I think I then saved the reduced 3-table set, but I am not certain of that. Alpha would not then respond to my clicks on Add Table when trying to add the proper table to the last (3rd) table in the set. The button would visibly "click", but no dialog appeared to allow creation of new link.

And maybe the next thing is acting per design - but it's annoying: when I form a Mapped Table or Set, then choose later to unlink all the tables and delete the set (maybe because I linked it incorrectly), all related FORMS disappear (and the tables frequently seem to get emptied as well).

Also, various hangs and lockups from time to time.

Anybody else seeing this sort of thing?

    Hi Jon,
After restructuring a set you should probably compact its dictionary files. Once the set is deleted, any layouts associated with it will go too. This is to be expected. Deleting a set however should not do anything to the tables it is based on. Anytime the dictionaries have deleted entries, it is a good idea to compact. Your tables may be experiencing index corruption, and you can rebuild them separately. Creating a set also creates indexes for the tables to use. Once the set is gone the indexes may become invalid.

When all else fails - Compact! And/or close and reopen Alpha.

(Speaking from a ver 7 point of view...)

      Hi Robin

I have a Bookings Form that takes 23 seconds to open
Two tables in set Bookings(9 Records) and activities(19 Records)
When opening the tables individually, they open almost instantaneous.
      What should I do?

      Thanks

Sounds like the Bookings form may be having some problems. Would have to see it to tell you anymore. Have you tried opening the default form for the set? If that runs well, then for sure it is your custom form. From the control panel just right click on the set and select the default form.

          Robin

Tested the default form and it opened in half a second. Then I created a new form and copied the objects over one by one closing and opening the form. The Browse was the culprit for some unexplained reason. I replaced the browse and now everything is fine.

          Thanks
