Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Browse font size

Using stylesheets, I've managed to change the font size for everything except browse cells. I changed heading font size but where is the setting for the cells?

    Re: Browse font size

    Hi Rob,

In view-->settings-->style you can supposedly set the default for fonts for forms, browses, etc., but I have tried to do so in version 8 and back to 5 even and it does not do so.

So either set them back manually :( or maybe use one of Cal Locklin's app tools http://www.aimsdc.net/Programs.htm

Is this a bug?? Dunno--I have tried to set a different size font in a custom stylesheet and it behaves rather oddly...such as setting the font to 12 but then any new browse column created has a font size of 4.

Again I am using version 8 ... regardless if others can confirm this a bug report could be issued....for the settings font and also for stylesheet font .

      Hi Mike.
Are you sure about ver 8? Because I only have the Desktop version which (rudely) tells me in the properties genie that I do not have the ability to set the advanced browse features because I did not buy the Pro or Enterprise edition. However when I use the Object Explorer, I can edit all those same properties with no problems.

ps - to me it is rude to even bother to show someone what you then tell them you have disabled. This is apparently some sort of reverse psychological marketing technique at work...

        Robin,
I have the Enterprise Edition of v8....
I cannot set the browse font via the object explorer (not listed), only the title font...but the browse font is listed in view->settings->styles area but is not working correctly (see prior post).

BTW--Sorry you got an "Edsel without features" when you purchased your software. (maybe Alpha would "upgrade" it for the price difference???--I sure would ask)

          Mike,
You are correct, in Stylesheets there is no font setting for the browse cells, but there is in the object explorer. I think though that once you have your browse formatted how you want, you can create a stylesheet that will retain the column fonts selected. I haven't tested this in ver 8, but recall that it does so in ver 7.

ps - if John Keogh sees this he may recognize that I am playing with his app...

OK just checked it out with ver 7 - no can do, the default font is MS Sans Serif for an embedded browse. In the Settings for Styles there is no choice to set a default font for Forms. You can set the font for a Browse but this will not apply to an embedded browse in a form (unless it is perhaps a subform object using a named browse). I always wondered why there was no default font setting for Forms. If it can be set to MS Sans Serif as the default then it ought to be able to be changed somewhere. Perhaps a substitution font set for Windows?

            1-Highlight the column
            2-Right click
            3-Choose Font size.

Yep--that is the possibility that my first post gave Rob---and if a lot of browse columns to do, Cal's tools would make it much easier (if it does this and I think it does....sorry Cal, it seems like I usually wait until something is needed lately before getting it and haven't had the need yet---maybe should change my way of thinking!).

                G,
Is that for a saved browse?? I cannot do that on an embedded browse...a font option does not appear in the right click menu.

                    :D

                    Well, enjoyed the videos G.

But is the same as what has been said really--nothing on the right click menu for font--have to choose properties as suggested prior and change first one and then either change the rest individuallyby opening up the properties form, use the advanced copy, or appearance copy features (the highlighting of all the columns as you also showed has never worked as far as I know). Regardless all these methods have to be done for each column individually.

I will have to watch the videos again as I cannot see or make the bug you suggested appear.

This should be placed in the wishlist forum I think.

                    EDIT:
I do see the bug..actually worse than I thought as it will only sometimes for me change more than just the first column --and right G, never the last column.

I submitted a bug report for version 8. Users with version 9 should submit one as well.

                      Re: Browse font size

If there was any discussion about modifying one column at a time vs multiple ones, it must have been in secret ink since I can't see it. Nonetheless, the video shows how to set then apply the font of one column to all remaining ones.

In the video, I called it a bug but it may or may not be. Maybe it was not intended to work in the first place and hence alpha would reply that it is not. But you could call it a bug based on the premise that alpha made it possible to highlight several columns at the same time and select properties. It's a philosphical question. I am inclined to call it a bug.
