Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Documenting code problem

In the process of documenting script code I have, run into what appears to be a "glitch" in the code editor.
In all cases after reaching about 30 carriage returns, from within the editor and using " ' " as the first character for the documentation line.On save and run (using icon button in code editor toolbar) results in a dlg error msg box which, always refers to the last line number of the commented code. Deleting , cutting , copy $ pasting does not solve this problem. The line index after remove line number as referenced in message box returns the subsequent previous line number.
The only workaround is select all cut , save empty scriptfile, close, open and then paste.

    Any thoughts on this matter?

I entered 42 comment lines, then a simple XDialog. Everything saved and ran fine.

I have had this happen in ver 8 and 7 and it was a missing end if statement that was the culprit. Sometimes the error messages are a bit cryptic.

First I write the code and run it. Only when I have the required result do I start the commenting procedure.

            Chris,
If the code is not too long, post it and we can look at it.

I'm by no means that familiar with xdialog, but shouldn't there be a closing parentheses after the last %dlg% tag?

Have been watching this because I am having problems in the other thread because of the javascript but no Robin there is no need for a terminating close bracket. the
                  Code:
                  <<%dlg%....%dlg%
serves as a wrapper for the dialog layout commands

Now I see that there is no opening parentheses, hence no need for a closing one.

                    What about this statement:

                    Code:
                    <cr:DateEdit id = "de" format=[COLOR=red]"dd /MM /yyyy"[/COLOR]/>
Should there be spaces in this format statement? I have noticed that the genie will sometimes insert spaces which need to be removed.

                      <cr:DateEdit id = "de" format="dd /MM /yyyy"/>
The editor doesn't allow comments within the HTML code it sees them as part of the html syntax. With regards to the spacing, this is javascript syntax and out of the scope of the code editor because it is between the html <<%html% , %html% tags of the script.

                        No.
                        Same way as in xdlg.

I have seen something similar at times where there is a line that is causing a syntax error. There was some invisible character that seemed to be causing issues with the compile.

One solution is to retype the offending line after deleting the entire line (and sometimes including the line above and below in case it was at the beginning or end of the line.

Another way is to export the code, then import it back in. This may solve the issue.

As far as commenting code, I in a 10000 line function, I have about 2500 additional lines of comments, some running on for probably 300 lines. Be careful that you do not include special key words at the beginning of the line, e.g.

                          'DESCRIPTION
                          'LIMITATIONS
                          'PASSWORD

                          etc.
