Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Newbie's questions

I'm new to A5 and would like to find answers for some of my stupid questions.

I've set up my database in PostgreSQL and created an active-link in A5 to connect with it.

    My questions are:

    1. I found that I cannot set auto increment for the ID field in any active link table. Is there any way to make my ID file to be auto-incremented each time I add a new record from a form?

    2. Where can I find the tutorials for newbie like me to create A5 desktop application step by step?

    Thank you in advance.

    Re: Newbie's questions

    Leowyc,

I do not have experience with PostgreSQL but I do know that with MySQL, fields have the option of being set to auto-increment.

As a newbie myself, I found the book "XBasic for Everyone" by Dr. Peter Wayne a huge help in beginning to learn Alpha (https://www.alphasoftware.com/shop/i...asp?PRODID=597)...

    Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply but the link does not work.

Is there any way to find the book in some other places?

      Thank you.

          ok, thanks Keith.

In the meantime, I've tried to set auto increment in PostgreSQL by using "serial" data type but when I add a new record, the ID column doesn't have any value but only 0. Any thought?

I would also like to know if I call out a field and want to store the value into another field, how to do this? For instance, I call value A from database into field A and now I want to store value A into field B. How can I implement that?

Actually I have so much so questions and that is the reason I need a book to save my life. I hope I can find some useful sources to help me to learn A5.

          Thank you in advance.

Sorry I cant help you with that.

This sounds like a calculated field in field rules. What I'm not sure about is why you want to store the same value in two fields?

Hope this has been of some help.

              Re: Newbie's questions

What I intended to do is I have a Customer table by storing each customer's details and I have a table called Order which contains details of each order that made by a customer.

Then, when I want to make an order for a customer, I'll search from the database for that particular customer first and I'll store the Customer ID in the Order table as a foreign key to refer to.

The Order table will look something like this:

Order ID | Customer ID | Item | Quantity

Does this make sense to you?

              Thank you.

                Re: Newbie's questions

                I have another question.

How to save a record only after I press the "Save" button? I notice that even you don't have any button, the field will save whatever you enter into the specific table.

And this is what in my "Save" button under "OnPush" event:

                parentform.commit()
                ui_msg_box("Record saved", "Saved successfully", ui_ok)
                parentform.New_Record()

Is this correct? What I wanna do is after save a record, the recordset will point to the newline for me to insert a new record. I have experience in VB6 and I don't know if XBasic will have any similarity close to VB6's way of coding?

I know I've asked some stupid questions but I really want to learn A5. Thank you. :)

                  Re: Newbie's questions

                  Hi Leow,

It will be difficult to answer different questions in the same thread. The recommended practice on this forum is first to do a search trying different words and reading what has been suggested before, if your question has not come up with an understandable answer then start a new thread.
The Order table will look something like this:
Order ID | Customer ID | Item | Quantity
Does this make sense to you?
No it does not. this does not allow you to have many Items on the same Order.

Have a look at AlphaSports. See how the Invoice works, then have a look at the Set structure. Note the linking keys of the tables in the Set. See if a table is linked 1:1 or 1:many. Examine the structure of the tables, and while you are doing that examine all the Field Rules and Indexes.

There you will find the Gold mine of how Alpha works.

                    Keith,

                    I'll examine AlphaSports more carefully.

Thank you for your advice. :)
