Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error message, field not valid

Out of the blue I'm getting an error message when opening a form or opening the form in design mode. This form has been working for years and it's been years since any design changes were made.

I can agree that FMT is not valid. There is no FMT on the form nor is any field named FMT associated with the form. Where did this come from? Why now? Other than remaking the form, a complex form at that, I'm baffled at what to do.

The form works flawlessly, I just keep getting this annoying message every time the form is loaded.

Could be there is an object somewhere whose name has become corrupted or a script that refers to said object is erroring or a script has become corrupted and the script thinks something referenced is a field by that name.

Since the error occurs when opening the form I would look at the oninit and possibly the onactivate.

I converted the form to a binary file (I hope Im saying this right). I did a find for the text FMT. As it turns out, there are a lot of FMTs in the binary file. The second from the last find is FLD=FMT. I believe this is what is generating the error message. Unfortunately, studing the code around the error does not give me a clue as to where to begin looking. Ive included the binary file. Open the file with notepad and do a find for FLD=FMT, match case and the find will take you right to the suspect code.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me may be able to give me a clue where to begin looking.

My binary file did not take. I converted the file to .txt. I hope this works.

Seems to be associated with a memo field but am no expert for sure---do you have a memo field on the form in question?

            Hi Mike,

Thanks for taking the time to look.

The form is built on a set. There are no memo fields on the form, but there are two fields named memo from two different tables. These fields appear to be functioning correctly.

I managed to fix the problem.

After getting a good nights sleep, I studied the code around the phrase FLD=FMT. It appeared to be related to a specific tab on the form.

I opened the form in design mode and studied that tab. I noticed that there was a very slight space between two fields in the embedded browse. See the accompaning pictures. After mouse clicking around that area, I was actually able to open a column with no field attached. I deleted that column and the error message went away.

This method of troubleshooting saved me hours of work as I would probably have reconstructed the form.

I lucked out with this one.

If you have a backup of the form before fixing it, take a look in the object explorer and see what you find.

Re: Error message, field not valid

                  Hi Stan,

I did as you suggested and in my perfect 20/20 hind sight, the errant column was listed under that particular browse object. The problem was the error message did not reference the errant column but referenced the field FMT.

The real problem was a column named Memo had no field attached to it and the column was compressed so as not to be seen. Now that I know what the problem was, opening the object explorer and expanding the browse7 object, there were two Memo objects listed.

At that point, one would say that there should only be one Memo object. Going to the browse7 object, there was only one Memo column as the errant one was compressed and not visible.

Anyways, I did manage to correct the problem and the object explorer may have worked also. I'm just glad I found the problem rather quickly.
