Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help - My indexes disappear!

I have a table with 5 defined indexes. My user calls and says he is getting errors when clicking on a button which sets an index and then finds by standard key. I go and open the table in design mode, check indexes and they are all gone! Not a one! I copy the .cdx file from a backup and they are back. Next day, another call; same problem. Indexes are wiped clean! What causes this? Where do I Look?

Re: Help - My indexes disappear!

A search of the message board will reveal that Alpha automatically deletes indexes in which each key cannot be evaluated. i.e. if the data necessary to define a single index key is missing or corrupt the index tag will be deleted from the CDX. This process does not delete the CDX file itself. The cure is to carefully check the indextag definitions against the data. Is there a mismatch between fieldnames used in tag spec and the fieldnames used in the table structure? Are you using filtered indexes in cases where the filtering criteria may not be available 100% of the time?

Thanks Tom. Boy, I haven't changed anything in this file for two years and it's been working fine. Besides, all 5 indexes being deleted?? Can changes in another table of the set cause index losses in a different table? There have been recent changes in indexes and field rules in a parent table in a set where the one losing indexes is a child table. I'll check and double check but, you explanation would explain losing one index, not all of them!! You are right, I don't lose the .cdx file but it's empty. I'll let you know what I find.

Jim, have you added or changed any operations that might be overwriting the dictionaries and the CDX?

          Hi Jim,

I'd take a look at backup programs or other system wide scheduled processes that might be backing up in an inappropriate way such that they cause a corruption of the index file (possibly because users are currently in Alpha at backup times).

It may also be virus scanners that might be causing the problem. Try turning it off for those directories and see if the problem goes away.

No, no changes. As a matter of fact, I took out the one table from the application. I used ONLY that table in a new application called indexbug.adb. When I run an update operation (Post Parts Orders) that has been working for several years (yes, I've double checked the operation and even redid it to ensure no corruption) the index file gets wiped out and the program locks up. I sent in the application created as a bug report but I'm now not so sure because I tried running it with A5V8 (because it's been working with that all along) and it locks that one up too. I am attaching it, if you want to take a look.

There is no update op with the name you supplied. Care to drop a few more bread crumbs so we can find the trail?

                Hi Tom
Well, I copied the zip file I sent you to a new subdirectory and unzipped the file. I then saw a .adb file and opened it. Under operations, I see an operation with the name Update Parts Orders. I don't have any idea why you don't see it. How can I spread crumbs for you?

                Edit
Sorry, I said Post parts orders and I should have said Update Parts Orders.

Re: Help - My indexes disappear!

I just tested, and it updates successfully, but it takes a lonnnnnnngggggggg time. And, after it completes, if I go to the table and right click to design indexes, it is greyed out and unavailable.

Is this something that is run as a batch, like once a day, or does it run after making a record change?

                    Hi Martin
First, let me say this. I sent the zip file to my brother Bill and he is getting the same problem I am. I had also sent it in as a bug report and I have already received a reply from Selwyn who says he can reproduce the problem and is trying to find out why it is doing that. This is part of a four step process, all action scripts that execute one after the other. The first three process fine. They append an order record to an "orders" table, they create a PO Header. The next step is to update the parts file to show that the following fields are updated, qty on order, need, logical order y/n and qty total ordered over a period of time. It is this step that hangs up the program. My brother Bill said it executes OK without indexes so I should try it by defining one index at a time to see which index makes it hang up. I probably should have thought of that myself.

You may want to review the release notes for build 1593-3195 if you use table.external_record_content_get() anywhere in your code. Under some circumstances, using this function would strip indexes from a table. That was fixed in build 1593-3195.

Thanks, I will. I have since discovered that the first index "Unique Key" in the parts table is what was causing the problem and, as far as I can tell, I did not add that index there. I suspect A5 added it but not sure when or why. When checking my A5V8 application, I found that index was not there, yet it appeared after two weeks using A5V9. I have since deleted the index and everything is working fine and, as yet, the index has not re-appeared. It may, when I do something else Alpha doesn't like but so far, so good.
