Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Clearing a from variable attached to a tree

    I have attached a simple db to illustrate my problem.

    I have a variable field on a form that has a control type of tree. The tree uses a table lookup for population

    Once a value has been selected, I would like to be able to click a button that would clear the value stored in the variable (so variable ="") and refresh the tree so it no longer highlights the last value selected. IF the tree would collapse as well that would be great.

    I can set the variable value to "" but the tree still highlights the last value selected.

    I can get the tree to collapse but it then sets the variable to the first value in the tree.

    In my actual app, i want to use this technique so a person can click on a value in the tree and a browse on the form will filter to that value. However, I will need to be able to both reset the variables value and reset the tree control through a button push.

    Any thoughts.

    Hi Tony,

    Refreshes do seem to be the bane of Alpha...or Alpha developers, however you want to look at it.

    Here is a "nice", convoluted way that works until you or someone else finds a better way!! :)

    Replace your button's OnPush event with this:

    Code:
    topparent:Tree1.activate()
    topparent:Tree0.value =""
    topparent:Tree0.activate()

    topparent:Tree0.value =""
    topparent:button1.activate()

        Re: Clearing a from variable attached to a tree

        Mike,
        We are getting closer. I think i need to post the actual form that holds this process.

        Here is what I am looking to do with this form...I want to be able to sort my client list (located in the embedded browse) in two ways:
        1) if the build filter checkbox is not checked: each time the user selects a value from the trees or other fields the client browse is filtered to that value. IOW...Each time a new value is select the browse filters to just that value.

        2) if the build filter checkbox is checked: each time a value is selected it is added to the filter expression...so the filter builds upon the users concurrent selections.

        When the user checks or unchecks the build filter box and when the user selects the show all button, the filter should be cleared, variable values set to "", the trees reset, and the browse refreshed to show all records.

        Your solution does everything but show all records in the embedded browse. Actually, when I used it, it hid all records in the browse, even when i added topparent.show_all(), and/or topparent:browsename.show_all() and fetch_first() for both. If you click the button a second time the browse will then show all records.

        it appears that the form stays filtered as the clear filter button is still active on the toolbar and pressing it will then show all records in the browse.

        Thanks again for your help.

          Tony,

          Use this

          Take the topparent.show_all() out. Add this. Notice that having "topparent" is not always necessary and "parentform" will work as well.
          Code:
          Clnt_Brws.activate()
          topparent:Clnt_Brws.show_all()

            Re: Clearing a from variable attached to a tree

            Why is the topparent not necassary in this situation? I thought you always needed it to reference an object on a form.

            Also, in this particular situation...is there a difference between using topparent and parentform? Do they do the same thing?

            Thanks again.

              Tony,
              I figured I might have triggered something when I did that to you! Just so you know, I most times use the Object Explorer to copy script to the clipboard and it always uses "topparent" and so I do usually use that...but just wanted to let you know that there are other acceptable ways as well.

              If you are referring to the form that currently has focus usually nothing is needed. Here is a link that will explain it much better than I can...

              http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...se_Objects.htm

              BTW--Don't know if it is only in your sample, but your Select List/Unselect List is referring to "browse1" and should be using "Clnt_brws".

                Thanks for the info. I will read up on it.

                As for the checkbox, thanks for pointing that out. I was focusing on the show all button and forgot to update the check box.
