Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Calculating the difference between dated and time fields:

Does anyone know a way of calculating the difference between two date and time fields, expressed in hours and minutes:
    Ex: 10/21/2008 23:00 and 10/22/2008 0230 answer expressed as 3 hours 30 minutes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Al Gaudin

Re: Calculating the difference between dated and time fields:

    Hi Al,

If your fields are Time fields (contains the date and the time) then you can just subtract one field from the other and get the correct difference (haven't done it in awhile, your answer might be in minutes or seconds so you'd have some division to incorporate).

If your dates and times are separate fields, then you have a little more work. Your 2 dates you can subtract one from the other. For the times, there's a function called totime() which returns the seconds past midnight for a time.

    If you get stuck, repost!

    Hope this helps.

Would this help as well? From the help file...

      - (Date Time Subtraction)

      Syntax

      Result as D = Operand1 as T - Seconds as N

      Seconds as N = Operand1 as T - Operand2 as T

      Argument
      Description

      Operand1
      A date time value.

      Operand2
      A date time value.

      Seconds
      A number.

      Description

Time subtraction produces a date time value or number by subtracting an integral or fractional number of Seconds from Operand1.

      Examples

The following example shows how to modify a date time variable (type T) by subtracting seconds.

      t1 = now()

      ? t1

      = 10/19/2005 11:07:07 53 am

      t2 = ctodt("10/20/05 12:07:07 53 am")

      ? t2

      = 10/20/2005 12:07:07 53 am

      ? t2 - t1

      = 46799.992

      ? (t2 - t1)/60

      = 780

      ? (t2 - t1)/3600

      = 13

      t1 = t1 - 3600

      ? t1

      = 10/19/2005 10:07:07 53 am

Re: Calculating the difference between dated and time fields:

The tricky part is subtracting time values over the span of days if you store the date and time values in different fields. I had this problem in a calculated field on a form and used the expression below.

          ((((JDATE(END_DATE) - JDATE(CTOD("01/01/"+ALLTRIM(STR(YEAR(DATE)))))) * 24) + (TOSECONDS(END_TIME) / 3600)) - (((JDATE(DATE) - JDATE(CTOD("01/01/"+ALLTRIM(STR(YEAR(DATE)))))) * 24) + (TOSECONDS(TIME) / 3600)))

End_Date, End_Time, Date, and Time are all fields in my table. The expression returns seconds, so you may want to convert that back to hours and minutes. There may be more a more elegant solution, but this worked for me.

I am trying to do the same - only a step further. I only want to count working hours, i.e. how would I exclude the time between 5pm and 9am and also exclude Saturdays and Sundays?

              Larry,
Before this thread starts to divert to your question, let's make sure that Al, who started this thread, gets his question answered. It is probably best to start a new thread so not to get mixed up in this thread.
