Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Mapped table as child in set

Should I be able to add a mapped table as a child table in a set?

I have a mapped table (clients_pos) that contains two fields from a table called teams.

When I edit the set, I can select this table and its linking key. However, when I exit the window that lets me create the relationship, the set tree show the teams table rather than the mapped table clients_pos.

    Should it do this?

    Hi Tony,

As much as I have a fairly good imagination, I have failed to get a handle on what you are asking.

Can you zip up your app and post it here and tell us what you would like it to do rather than, "Should it do this"?

    Later:

I created a mapped table and tried to add to an existing table as a child table, the genie let me start but would not save.

I then created a new set with the mapped table as the child, and it expanded as if I had added the two tables one at a time.

So I guess the answer to your question, "Should I be able to add a mapped table as a child table in a set?"
    is, Yes.

Re: Mapped table as child in set

I would love to but am away from my development computer for a few days.

Basically I have been trying to add a mapped table to a set. The mapped table would be child table.

      Team_info
      - CL_team
      ---->-Clients
--------->-Clients_pos (mapped table)<-this is where i want the mapped table

So i want to link the mapped table (clients_pos) to clients table using my client_id as the key.

I select the clients table and click the Add Link button. I then select the clients_pos table (which is my mapped table) and select the client_id for the key.

I click OK to save the link and it takes me back to the set editor window. However, instead of showing Clients_pos as the new linked table, it shows CL_team.

Now...the Clients_pos mapped table is based off of the CL_team table. So I am guessing that the reason this is happening has something to do with this fact?.?

      Does this make more sense?

        is, Yes.

Not sure if that is true. But maybe Keith knows something more on this.

"Alpha Five now allows you to create 'mapped' tables. A mapped table is a virtual table that displays data from one or more physical tables. The mapped table can include all, or a subset of, the field fields in the physical tables that it maps. It can also include calculated columns. Once you have created a mapped table, it appears in the Tables tab of the Control Panel just like any other table. You can create Forms, Reports, Labels, Letters and Operations for mapped tables just as you would for physical tables. Mapped tables can be read-only, or updateable, depending on how they are defined."

No mention of using them as part of a set. Since it is not a "real" table and is a "virtual table, I doubt that you can use this as part of a set.

Should is not quite the same as Can. Should might imply that it is designed this way by A5. But, it seems you can not add a mapped table into a set. Adding the mapped table actually adds the physical table instead. I created a mapped table and added a calculated field. I selected the mapped table as the child in a set - with all fields - and saved it. The resulting browse does not show the calculated field. Editing the set shows the physical table, not the mapped table. So, maybe you should be able to, but you can not... unless I'm missing something.

Can you create a mapped table using xbasic or does it have to be done in the genie?

Check this thread and look for Selwyn's reply

PS using the search feature usually finds these things I searched for "Mapped Tables"
