Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Search Form

    Hi,

I am very new to Alpha 5 and I am working on a little project for myself.

I have a couple of tables in this database and I am trying to search one of those tables to see if there is any records already.

The table that I am working with right now is called muni_info. I want to be able to open up a form that will come up with a couple of drop down lists that are populated with data from this table. I want the first drop down list to be populated with states that are already in the table using the 2 letter abbv. Then after that I want to use the next drop down list to search on the counties that are already loaded into the table.

Once the records are found they could be displayed one at a time on a form or in a subform, I am not sure the best way to display them.

If anyone has any better ideas then using drop down lists I am open to ideas.

    thanks!

    Re: Search Form

    Hi Tim,

First of all, welcome to the forums!
Your thread got buried obviously which is not something anyone wants to happen. You asked more than one question which sometimes makes it a problem to get a response....you will find that it works better for all when a thread is limited to one question, that way when searching the messageboard for an answer, only the relevant answers will appear.

Regardless, the use of the Exist() function is where I'd start for finding out if a value was present in a table--here is a help file link for the function...

    http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...ns/EXIST().htm

I am not sure of what you want to happen once you have determined if a value exists or not. And lastly it seems that you want two dropdowns, the second filtered by the first??

Anyways, I thought I'd bring the thread to the front of the pile to give it another chance at being solved....once the specific question is actually asked that is!
    Mike

      Re: Search Form

      Mike,

Thanks for the reply, I will try and keep it to one question at a time. Sorry for the delay in getting back as I had some computer problems.

I will check out the Exist() function and see if I figure out how to get it to work.

Once I make the selection from the first drop down list I want the next one to be populated with the counties for that state that are in the database. I only want the State drop down list to include the states that are currently in the database as not all states are in the database.

It would work something like this

First drop down list is State, select OH.

Next drop down list would be populated with the counties in Ohio that are in the database. I could then select the county and that I am interested in.

After I select the county then in a subform there would list all of the cities and townships and such that are located in that county that are already in the database.

Hope this helps. I will keep working on it from my end and post any results that I get.

      thanks again!
      -Tim
