Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How do you close report editor?

    I've used Alpha 5 for over a decade and created numerous reports, but there is one nagging issue that I can't figure out. There doesn't seem to be a way to close the report editor without closing Alpha 5. When I'm creating or editing a form, I can close the form from the File menu. That option does not present itself in report design mode. Am I missing something?

    There should be an x in the upper right hand corner below the program shut down in v9. You can also goto window/cascade and then close the editor.

    I have complained about this before too in V7, V8, V9

      Possibly. I toggle WINDOW BAR on the VIEW menu so that all windows opened during a development session are available on tabs at the bottom of the screen. The right click menu of each of those tabs will give you the option to close the corresponding window.

      Having said that I should also add that my report design window includes the system menu, so I can close the design window using the red "X" without using the Window Bar if I want to.

        Hi Tom, Jeff,

        As you can see below. I have no red X, but look at the top right corner. I don't even have that in V7.

        I toggle WINDOW BAR on the VIEW menu so that all windows opened during a development session are available on tabs at the bottom of the screen.
        Tom's idea is a good one except I would forget to turn it back off.

        This is on Vista, but I think it is the same on the XP machine I have.

          Dave, I see two system menus in your image. The larger (outer) menu is for the Alpha Five window. Can't you use the smaller (inner) menu to close the design window? i.e. the smaller "X"...

            Re: How do you close report editor?

            My screen doesn't show an X to close the design window (not even a grayed-out X like in Dave's image). I used Dave's original suggestion of cascading the windows and it works fine. I also tried Tom's idea with the window bar and that works, too.

            Thanks to both of you for your help.

              Just to see if it could be done.

              Code:
              rlst =  a5.Report_Enum()
              for each foo in rlst
              rpt = word(foo,1,"@")
              cmd =  ":"+rpt+".close()"
              if is_object(":"+rpt)
              	eval(cmd)
              end if
              next
              This does not save any changes you might have made. It will not close a report in preview mode, only those in design mode.
              There can be only one.

                Re: How do you close report editor?

                Tom,

                In the second post is where I was talking about the second down x to close the report in V9.

                I believe that when you turn off the ability to shut down with the system x, it all goes away. At least it does in v7. I am working hard on v9 at this point, so I have it set for my use. Later, I will lock it down like I did v7 and I think that x will go away. Not sure yet.
