Hi All,

Could somebody please tell me how I can test the value of a Blob var? So If

I have a var = NewHospital and the value of Newhospital = "" I want to set the value to "N/A"

I know the "" is wrong as I get the error wrong data type

Andy, is NewHospital a table field? what's it's data type?

What's the data type of "var" ?

Are both NewHospital and "var" blobs?

By the way I think "var" is a terrible name for a variable.

Andy, I'm with Tom. Can you try to explain that again without using = unless you mean to show an assignment of value?

I don't see a problem with assigning a null string to a blob and then assigning a character value.

firstly Tom I mislead you I should have said I have a variable named newhospital, not var = newhospital

Let me explain a little more,

I have a set of questions that asks a client to explain about their medical conditions, and if they have been in hospital in the last twelve months I have a text field in a xdialog where they tell me what & why.

once they have answered I run the code

newhospital = a5_spellcheckstring(Qhospital,"text","",.t.,"","")

this all works fine, and I was happily writing the answer away using the code

ac.Hosp_Meno = char_to_blob(newhospital)

the problem occurs if the user cancels the spell check the error then says

wrong data type.

Note that the result of the function you are using is not text/character -

A dot variable containing the results of the spell check, including the last button pressed by the user.

You will need to examine the underlying results. Namely newhospital.text for the value to write and newhospital.lastbutton to see if the check was cancelled.

thanks it work well, this is what I came up with, if the spell check is cancelled

newhospital = a5_spellcheckstring(Qhospital,"text","",.t.,"","")
if newhospital.lastbutton = "cancel"
newhospital.text = "N/A"
end if
