Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How can I use the indexed file in a search

I have designed a button, when I click on it I want it to use an index file. At this time it keeps using the normal file not the index file. So to search thru the file (750000 records) takes longer. The index files is indexed on the memo field.
This is what I am using at this point created it with the genie

Re: How can I use the indexed file in a search

I an unfamiliar with a5_open_layout() but any layout must be based on a table or set. You can't choose which "file" to attach the layout to.

If you are asking how to make your code use an index which you have created for the table upon which you layout is based, take a look at LQO.

If your filter meets the qualifications there, do you have the table indexed on Machine_name and Explanation?
    There can be only one.

Is this a web server application or a desktop application?

Re: How can I use the indexed file in a search

What I am trying to do is to search through all of the records on the machine name field and the explanation field. Machine name is a character field, explanation field is a memo field.

I have a browse with all of the computer names in it, I have a button on that browse. I would like to be able when I have clicked on a computer name in the browse and then click on the button that it goes thru the entire table to find that name in the machine field AND/OR the explanation field. Then a browse opens up with all of the found records.
At this point when I click on the button it asks me to enter the name of the computer that I am looking for. I want it to use the name of the computer that is clicked on. I hope this makes sense.

        Thanks

Re: How can I use the indexed file in a search

You are being prompted for the machine name because you are using an "Ask" variable, "AskC_Please_give_machine_name ". Change your script so that the variable you want to use in your filter expression is populated from the machine name column in the selected row. You can do this with Action Scripting. Use the "Variables" cateogry, then choose the "Set variable(s) to object text property" action.

Re: How can I use the indexed file in a search

You can't use an index to answer the query:
              Code:
              filter = "(left(Machinename,len(var->AskC_Please_give_machine_name)) = var->AskC_Please_give_machine_name ) .or. (containsi(Explanation,var->AskC_Explanation_machine_name) )"
You are asking to select any memo field that contains the machine name. An index won't help. Every record has to be searched. For example, suppose you have records like:

              MachineName Explanation
George This is a very fine machine that Jorge bought.

Lisa Mary had a little lamb and also a computer.

Rodney Does anyone besides Jorge like Rodney?

The index on "explanation" will begin with the words "This", "Mary", and "Does". If you want to search for "Jorge" in the "explanation", then all the records have to be searched and each memo has to be exhaustively searched. Even if you search for "Rodney", who is indexed in the MachineName field, you still have to search every other record in the Explanation field.
