Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Runengine Install Problem

I upgraded my v8 to v9, and at the same time purchased and installed the unlimited runengine and app server.

I installed v9, full developer (i.e. what is distributed as a5v9_full_dl.exe) and activated it... no problems.

I installed what I thought/think is the v9 runengine (i.e. what is distributed as a5v9_RunEngineSetup.exe)... and it seemed to install OK....

BUT, when I run the developer and attempt to create an install package... I am told I must first install and run the runengine... which I have... see above. So, I uninstalled and re-installed the runengine... still no luck.

OK, tell me what I'm missing... please :-)

    Hi Mike,

Stupid question, but did you actually START (execute) the Run Engine? I think it has to create the appropriate registry entries on first run.

      Re: Runengine Install Problem

      Doug,

Thanks for asking... I THINK I started it, LOL... but I'm not really sure what IT... is. After the install said it was successful, I ran the "C:\Program Files\a5v9 RunEngine\alpha5.exe" that it put in my start menu under "... Run Engine" heading.

When I did/do... it looks a lot like, if not exactly like, the developer exe I run all the time. Sorry I'm so clueless... but I'm not exactly sure what one should see when one runs "the run engine" :-)

        Re: Runengine Install Problem

I think my problem may have something to do with the license number I entered as part of the process when I was installing the Run Engine. I say this because when I do an About Alpha5 in the full version... and in the Run Engine... I see the same license number.

Does it make sense that if I entered my full license number... rather than my run engine license number (i.e. my unlimited dist. license number)... that it would "think" it was a full version exe rather than a run engine exe?

If that's the case... how do I modify the license number? I found it in the registry... but I hate to go mucking around in there too much... without a little direction form someone who knows.

          Re: Runengine Install Problem

          Hi Michael

I think if you have found the right key in the registry you would be safe in editing it to contain the correct number.

Also consider the response I posted to a related question a while back. Whilst the install maker in Alpha is OK the Astrum product is cheap and sophisticated alternative.

The way I have done it is to create a file called license.key simply containing the key as a string and then place it in the runtime programmes folder. I have then used Astrum Installer to create an install .exe to install in clients machines. Do remember to set the requisite controls to be registered at the time if installation.
We send out a lot of demo copies of our software and use Astrum to create a single installation for both A5 runtime and our application.
          Hope that helps.

            Hi Bob,

Do you use Alpha 5's Runtime to create your own Splash Screens and then create the executable using the Alpha 5 Runtime output?

            Thanks,
            Rudy

No I normally create my splashscreens with Paintshop Pro and use Astrum Install create an installation exe to install both the runtime and my application.
