Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error 5500

I created an app and tested on an XP machine and a Vista laptop - no problems. Then I tried to install it on a Vista Home machine and received the "Error 5500" message when trying to preview a report. I tried to the printer setup and got the same message. There is a Brother all-in-one printer attached to it and all other apps don't seem to have a problem printing to it.

I'm stumped... what would cause this?

The help file says Error 5500 is "no printer configured".

BTW, I checked my report properties and all of them have Default Printer as the printer setting.

    Thanks!

I think you are a victim of Alpha's inability to work on 64 bit machines. Try changing your print preview to just a standard print job (no preview) and see how you go(just to see if you can physically print something). If I recall the preview option somehow uses the Amyuni driver Alpha bundles for PDF creation.

        Re: Error 5500

        Hi,

I had a similar problem, reports print/preview OK on XP and Vista but not on Vista Home Basic O/S. My solution was very simple but it took me hours of trial and error to discover the cure.

Assuming that you install the Runtime and app in separate folders and if your Runtime folder is named 'A5V9Runtime' then rename it without the A5 to read V9Runtime (and of course your shortcut) so that it will be alphabetically below your application folder in the install tree.

Although this may sound very unlikely, I was able to force and un-force the errors at will with using simple cure.

Doing searches on the forums is showing me that this problem is creeping up quickly.

This is not good... The computer that is a Vista 64 was bought at Best Buy off the shelf. This has to be fixed quick! Can you imagine trying to demo an app on a customer's "shiny new machine" and not being able to do a simple print preview????

            JP,

Did you try printing straight to the printer with no preview just to see if that worked?

I agree. Alpha folks are you LISTENING?

No, because this is unfortunately not an acceptable work around. My app's appeal is the ability to do filters and then print preview the data within the screen. Disabling this or having a separate version for 64 machines is just not feasible.

I will submit a bug report immediately but I find it hard to believe that the Alpha developers didn't think, "Hmmm... maybe we should test thing on Vista 64 machines as they are being sold like hotcakes now."

I have sent a bug report several weeks ago. I got a reply from Selwyn that there is a problem. I have not heard anything else.

You might have something else going on....hopefully......

I just tested on my Vista 64 bit machine and I can, in fact, do a Print Preview of a report so it sounds like something else might be going on with your system / installation.

As you probably know, bug reports are read. Posts to the message board may or may not be seen. A lot of bug reports in a specific area would certainly attract attention. An isolated report from a single user, less so.

Do you see the "Alpha Five Printer" if you go into Control Panel -> Printers on the Vista Machine?

                          Re: Error 5500

Here is a solution I just found on the Amyuni Forum and IT WORKED!!!!! I can now printer to PDF files using Alpha5 Version 9 on my Vista 64 Bit machine.

I modified it slightly to pertain to Alpha.

                          1) Make sure that you are logged in as a user with administrator rights.
                          2) Select Control Panel, and click Printers.
                          3) Right-click the Alpha Five Printer icon
                          4) Select the Ports tab, then click the Add Port... button.
                          5) Select Local Port and click the New Port... button.
                          6) Enter NUL: for the new port name and click OK. Close the Printer Ports window.
                          7) Ensure that the NUL: port is selected in the Ports list.
                          8) Select the Advanced tab.
                          9) Select the Spool print documents radio button to make the options below it clickable.
                          10) Clear (uncheck) the box labeled Enable advanced printing features.
                          11) Select the Print directly to printer radio button again.
                          12) Click the Apply button, and then click OK.

I will try your suggestions and report when I get back in front of the 64 computer tomorrow. Thanks for the help!
