Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Restore restores to path relative to origin

    Good day,

I have found that the restore action script, restores to a path relative to the original destination (stored when making the backup). Now thats not always correct, so my question is how can I change this behaviour?

    Kind regards
    George

George, I'm no expert - (I just saw your post as I was posting my own question) - but ...

In the 'restore' window, the third (right-hand) TAB titled "Destination" let you select the retore destination folder - make sure the folder pre-exists, though.

I used to get caught out by this too ... hope this sorts it for you.

Sorry George. I see what you mean. There are only the TWO tabs in the Action Script version of Restore.

Can't help further, unless you are able to run restore from the opening Alpha screen, when you do get the option to restore to a specific destination as previously described.

Re: Restore restores to path relative to origin

Thanks for looking at the problem John.

My problem still exists, even when I use the restore option on the A5 menu. The reason is that, when you look at the contents of the backup file (the zip file) you notice that A5 has not only saved the file name, but also kept a portion of the original location path.

        See attached screen picture.

Please can someone shed some light here.

        Kind regards
        George

I agree this is a problem and a pain. I can't remember but I think it first arose in version 8 but it may only be version 9.

Re: Restore restores to path relative to origin

When using the "zip database" command you have the option to "disable" the "abolute path", BUT when doing a backup that option is NOT available and is what is causing the issue.

Am I wrong in expecting to be able to switchoff the "absolute path" setting for a backup?

            Regards
            George

Re: Restore restores to path relative to origin

George, as the backup is only a zip file anyway, have you tried zipping the whole of your application directory? Restore should find this, and restore to where you want I guess.

I hasten to add, I've not tried this in v9, but I used to use this method a year or so ago to transport my work to my home pc (sad or what ..!)

              It worked OK then ...

              Regards

George - this is not ideal, but I'm sure you could compile a batch file to do the same.

If you extract the small file named simply 'database' from the <Yourbackup>.zip, then (with notepad) edit/replace the path with your own, save back into the zip file, overwriting the existing one.

Run restore, and it will restore to your path.

Sounds complicated, but takes less than a minute. !

Yeah John, after thinking about it I realize that its not a big deal and one could workaround it. I am evennow considering writing our own "backup" using the zip command and replacing the A5 action script.

BUT the behaviouer of the A5 backup acstion script is still not what I or my unknowing customers expected, thats the sad part.

Anyway, let me run of and train the users.

                  Regards
                  George
