Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    12/01 update, issues with find command

    Updated 12/01/2008, find command on a record finds something close to key, but not match. This worked yesterday. I will search for an exact match, but does not bring it up on form. Is thia a bug in the new patch release?

    Re: 12/01 update, issues with find command

    Hi Wes,

    If you are talking about build 1869_3218 released on 25/11/08, I found so many problems with this I had to revert back to the previous build. I think others are reporting problems with it as well.

    I did report this to Alpha, but they want a sample database which highlights the problem. To do this you need the bugged build on your computer to replicate the problems and then send this to Alpha, so if you can do this it would be of great help. I am reluctant to install the update again as both times I have tried it similar problems occurred and I was unable to carry on with normal work.

      Re: 12/01 update, issues with find command

      Hmm, surprise to see this message, i lost my whole weekend to try figure out why my Sql log in not working.

      I use variable in place of sql server name (usually ip addresses)
      user name, user password and it goes, as my ip changes depending which office user try to connect to, well this had stopped working over the weekend and i could not find out why, now after reading this email, i reveretd back to an older version and my application strated to work again.

      DIM cn as SQL::Connection
      dim flagResult as l

      Database='logistic'}" )

      'flagResult ="{A5API='SQLServer',Server='"+sql_server_name+"',UserName='"+sql_user_name+"',Password='"+sql_user_password+"',Database='logistic',A5LoginTimeout='"+sql_login_timeout+"',A5ConnectionTimeout='"+sql_connection_timeout+"',A5QueryTimeout='"+sql_query_timeout+"'}")
      if flagResult = .f. then
      ui_msg_box("Error","Could not connect to database. \
      Error reported was: " + crlf() + cn.CallResult.text)
      sql_status_logistic = "disconnect"
      end if
      cn.PortableSQLEnabled = .f.
      sql_status_logistic = "connected" IP addresses)
      database user name & password.

        Re: 12/01 update, issues with find command

        accidentally sent before completing my explanation, now the error simply invalid user name and ODBC error, but if i coded the ip address and user name and password in place of the variable, the connection seems ok.

        Or build the connection from the xbasic sciprtor, connection seems ok
        but not using the variables as i describe,

          If you are going to build an argument for a function or a string for a parameter, I find it much easier to build the string first and then use the variable.

          allows you to build the string, see it to confirm that it is correct and then use it. When you're done, you can comment the a5_show_variable(cs)

          I have no idea if your code is correct, but you can debug it yourself with this method.

            Re: 12/01 update, issues with find command

            yes, good suggestion, i dod not look at my codes when i posted.
            but i wanted to say that we have been logging into 5 different sql server
            on the hourly basic across the country, using variable as ip and user name & pw.
            since this patch was added on, they all failed to work.

            i hope it is my codes, will find a session in between my work this morning to troubleshoot, i will use your idea and comment back later thanks

              Re: 12/01 update, issues with find command

              sounds like it's time to revert to past builds. Where can I get the previous build that is somewhat more stable?

                Re: 12/01 update, issues with find command

                found previous build. Am processing now. Will adivse on results

                  Re: 12/01 update, issues with find command

                  yes, i have previous built in my server, unsure the effect of re-loading older built
                  seems to take it nicely

                    Re: 12/01 update, issues with find command

                    installed old build. Corrected the find issue quite nicely. Someone from Alpha Software please advise when it is safe to update..

                      Re: 12/01 update, issues with find command

                      Wes, use the "Send Bug Report" option on the Alpha Five Help menu if you want to assure that someone at Alpha sees your issue. This board is largely peer supported and while Alpha folks wander by now and then no one on staff is reading all the posts.
