Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

New Patch causing problems with Browse?

Can anyone tell me if they have experienced problems with the browse on the latest patch?

I have a piece of code that is meant to update some global variables when a row in a table is updated. I use the OnRowChange event to fire off the code but it no longer seems to work???

I have tried adding another function into my code to just display a message when the OnRowChange event occurs, but the message box never appears. Indicating to me that something is now wrong with the OnRowChange event.

It used to work fine with the previous Patch, however I have also installed the db application onto Vista and I am wondering if its the patch or the change of operating system that is causing the problem?

Can anyone advise or check to see if they are having similar problems? If this is repeatable I will report it as a bug!

Browse is not working. Go back to a previous patch until it works again. Report to A5. They have many issues to untangle in their latest.

Try Build 3216. I am on 3220 after the problems with 3218. I went back to 3216 and all worked fine. I then installed 3220 which supposedly corrected the problems with the browse. NOT. I just lost (deleted) two months of data by deleting one file. Same problem I had with 3218.

3216 fixes my problems. I will not be downloading any more updates. I am not a beta tester.

I just installed 3222 and it deletes large blocks of files when attempting to delete one also. Back to 3216 and all works well.

Can you clarify on this a little more. How where you attempting to delete a file, what do you mean by "large blocks" of files.

I'd have to agree with Dick Krause on this one. I've also had problem with 3218 and reverted back to 3216. Didn't go to 3220 until I saw there weren't problems. Evidently there are. Although I have gotten into the habit of ALWAYS (ususally several times a day) backing up, and I have learned that it's not a good idea to always jump into downloading the new build as soon as it comes out.

I do understand that I can submit a bug report if needed. BUT, I am not a beta tester. I would rather feel 100% confident that whatever latest build I downloaded would not have "bugs". I work long hours every day and for me to submit bug reports when they arise is not something I want to fit in my schedule.

That being said, the fellows at Alpha are good people that will ultimately get the job done. They have put out an outstanding product and I am very thankful for that.

I want to chim in that 3216 is what I keep going back to. I reported a bug after 3216, and it takes a few seconds with the newest patches before I go back to 3216. I am a bit curious why they don't line up all the examples that folks have sent in and test the patch agains them If they did that, mine would tell them in a few seconds it aint fixed.

              Mike,
One little "glitch" I do notice with 3216 is that the grandchild browse does not refresh consistently. So if I am browsing the parent browse after a short while the grandchild browse no longer displays the coprrect record (it just gets stuck on one record). The child browse seems to be fine. I also downloaded and installed the latest build (current Alpha Five Version 9 build is 1898_3223 (released on 09 DEC 2008 09:11 PM) AND that fixes the grandchild refresh problem. I am happy to see they are spending time on the browse (if that's what they are doing???).

                Don,
you are describing exactly what i am seeing in the releases after 3216, and reported. That is not happening for me in 3216, and why I keep going back.

This problem has now been solved in the latest patch:

                  Build: 1898 Addins: 3223

However, I have other problems now, not sure if this new patch has caused them though see my post:

                    Hi,

Using build 1898 causing error in browse.
I have a set, one to many, when I retrieve data from a mysql tbl via conn.toOpentable() to the child table, will it not link the retrieved data to the parent any more. I have to re index etc. to get the data to show. Once I can see the child records, I cannot browse the records in the child table.

                    Guess back to 3216 then...

                    Regards
                    Walter

I downloaded Build: 1898 Addins: 3223. I still see the browse navigation problem in a grandchild record. It is not fixed as far as I can see. I am back to 1847-3216.

I am surprised I guess. I haven't seen any issues with most recent build (Build: 1898 Addins: 3223). Not to send you on a wild goose chase... but have you tried packing & updating indexes after installing latest build?

btw, the browse for parent, child, and grandchild all seem to be working fine here. Everything is in synch and refreshing properly.

                          Try this.
download and open this portfolio database. The positions are real stocks but the money part has been changed. It is bogus data.

From the main menu choose "positions"
Give focus to the Positions browse
Try the slide bar navigation to the end of the table or the arrow down. At a point 2/3 the way, it locks on position symbol "CW" and does not display the remainder of the table properly. The Greatgrandchild browse "Transactions" does change and shows properly. Go figure.

                            I'm back.
3223 does NOT correct the deletion problem in browses.
I just tried a delete after updating to 3223. Poof, 190 files gone.
Yesterday's delete of a single record using 3222 lost 407. They can be undeleted, fortunately, but my confidence level is not high.

Back to 3216 and all seems fine.

By the way, I have the same problem with ths slide bar that Mike Wilson mentions above. Also back to normal with 3216.

                              Mike,
It seems that the "order expression" on the positions form (set currently at Pos_Name) is creating a problem. Removing that solves the problem, but I'm sure that's not what you want to do. I'll keep searching for a solution.
