Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Form opens with no record

I have a form based on a table (24 fields, 2 are table lookup character and 3 are rich text memo) with an ask variable for the filter and a reverse order sort.
When I open the form for the first time with the data for the ask variable it opens as a blank form.
If I do a page down it will display the second last record and a page up will then display the last record.
If I call up the form again then the last record is shown as I would expect.
When I call up the form for the first time (blank form) and I go to edit the form thinking it is a new form, the rich text memo fields will display the data for the last record if my cursor happened to be in either one of the two table lookup fields and i select any value from the table. After that if I go through the other fields, the data in these fields will display.

This started happening probably a year ago so today I thought I would rebuild the form and the same happens.

    Any thoughts?

Larry, it sounds like the form is opening before the ask variable is supplied, and then it's too late to filter the records because the form is already open. i.e. a timing issue with how you're implementing this. Should be easy to fix. Why not strip the filter and ordering specs out of the form, remove the ask variable, then run a script to open the form. The script would collect the necessary variable from the user, load the form (hidden), query the form after it's opened, and then finally, show the form to the user. Probably can be done with action scripting. -- tom

Tom, I think the form is opening after the ask variable as when I do the page up/page down routine, the filtered records are there.
I do the same with several other forms and no issues so I am not sure why this happens on this one.
I thought at one time you could set the form to open on a blank record so that you could go straight into the enter routine however I have not been able to find this again.

The only "blank records" are ones you have intentionally left blank or new records.

Opening a form and beginning a new record is usually one of the options available in action scripting. That option probably wouldn't be available if you have queried for existing records.
        There can be only one.

Larry, if it would help for another set of eyes to look for an explanation post a sample copy of your database here with instructions telling us where to look.

Re: Form opens with no record

Tom, I deleted the tables and forms that were not required and emptied the database and came up with the attached sample data. I am not sure why the job info.ddm file is so large. My job info table has a large number of fields so I deleted all but the two required however the DDM only reduced itself by half. I also noticed that almost all of the other files remain in the database even though the tables were deleted .ddm, .ddx, .alx are just a few that I thought would have been deleted.

If you open the RFI2 form and use a job number 12-3456 you should have an empty form show up. There are four test RFI entries for this job. Page down will put you at test 3 and then a page up will put you at test 4 which is the page that should appear when you first load the form. If you exit the form and load it a second time then all seems to work well.
The RFI # drop down table was not intended to enter a value in the field. It allows a lookup so that you can input the next number manually.

Re: Form opens with no record

Larry, as I suspected, the form doesn't "know" about the ASKC variable as it begins to open.

Add this variable definition as a "session variable" in the properties of your form layout:

              ASKC_JOB_NUMBER = ""

Tom, I will have to do some reading up on session variables as I have never used these. Don't understand why all of my other forms with ASKC variables work okay

Thanks for your help and I will give it a try. May have to correct the others as well.
