Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filtered Browse Help

I have attached a small sample database that I am working on but am having problems figuring out how to filter a browse from a table using an entry on the current form. Basically most of the tables are prebuilt although entries can be added on the fly. If you use the Test Main Form the process I want to follow is Enter a date, select a customer id, select a location id, select equipment type id, but on the final entry - problem description id I want the list that displays in the lookup to filter based on the entry in the equipment id entered just prior....is there a simple way to do this? I understand the record has not been saved yet but is there was way to look at the current form and filter that list? Thanks in advance.

This seems to do it. [ I added a filter specification to the table lookup field rule. ]

In the field rules for the problems.set.set got to the lookup tab for Prob_desc_id and in the filter enter the following

      Code:
      equip_type_id=problem_tbl->equip_type_id
      Tom

Edit: I see Tom C already has this handled.

OK this must be a dumb down day for me...in the same sample database on the browse question I have another problem....when using the test main form if on the customer id field I choose to add a new customer it opens the add customer form however when I click my save button it save the record and closed the first window but then it is in a new record form...it is not backing out to the test main form like I expect but is basically letting me add another customer .... how do I get it to back me up to where I was on the test main form to complete my entry?

Ron, I'm not seeing what you report, but I'm also not sure I'm following your sequence. Please describe it again in baby steps, skipping nothing, all keystrokes and mouseclicks are needed.

My bad.....in the version I uploaded I did not have the cust form added to the field rule. If you could make a small change to the problem_tbl field rules you will be able to see it...on the problem_tbl field rules on the cust_id lookup change the form layout to edit records to the Add Customer form and THEN go to the Test Main form and when you get to the cust_id entry and the lookup screen appears select "add new entry to list option" it lets me add a new entry but does not back me up to the original screen to let me continue that record...it treats it like I want to continue adding customer records to the list but that is not what I want. Sorry about the confusion.

                  Re: Filtered Browse Help

When you use a custom form to enter new records to the lookup source table, your custom form should not have any buttons and should not have any scripts running onInit. Delete the OnInit script. Delete the buttons. Your lookup should work fine.

                    Re: Filtered Browse Help

Thanks Tom but when I remove the init script and the buttons and attach the add customer form and go thru the process of the test main screen when I get to the cust id field and the list pops up next I select add to the list I get my custom add customer form but after I complete the add it cycles to let me add another customer...I have to close the screen by clicking the X . Then I have to click my customer id field again to pick the customer I just added. This does not seem intuitive to me. That is why I had the button on the custom screen to show the user how to save and exit. Also it looks like I would have to have a separate add customer form for the client to use when adding a number of customers in advance. Is that how this should work?
