Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Privileges and user group

I have followed the instructions in the help file and created groups of users like Admin, Supervisor, Agents. My problem is that there are only 2 types of privileges for Tables/Forms/Reports..: Grant and Deny and nothing in between. For expl at table level for Change Records, it is either granted or denied. Suppose I want to grant the change of records to Agents only if record date is less than 3 days old or some other condition like Amount is less than $500 and Supervisor the privilege to change records if amount is less that $3,000 and change is denied if record is older than, say, 10 days. How can I go about it?

    Re: Privileges and user group

If you require the user to push a button to change a record the button's onPush event could run a script that determines if edits by the current user are ok. In other words, instead of blocking edits to a table by group, you can get the granularity you need by blocking edits at the form level.

That would be great. But here too, when I go to From Properties, under Restrictions, it is Change Record or not. I can't find a feature that allow more flexibility.

        Re: Privileges and user group

I'm sorry if my earlier post misled you. I wasnt' speaking of form properties. I was trying to describe a button that runs a custom script. That script determines the identity of the current user, checks to see which groups they belong to, then checks to see if other "allow edits" criteria are present. If all is good, then the form's restriction against edits is lifted. If not the user gets an explanatory message. When the edited record is saved, the restriction against edits is re-imposed.

If you're looking for a single button solution to your custom requirements you're going to be disappointed. However, Alpha has the necessary tools to permit you to build a custom solution easily.

          Gaby,
Added to what Tom wrote, you are evaluating the values in a record and comparing the values against a pre-established matrix to set the security level that is or is not allowed access to edits/changes/deletes. This is an algorhythm that is developer-established and is beyond the turnkey single parameter security provided with the grouping system in A5. What you are describing, to me, will require either a script with many if-end if or selection-case-end selection statements, or a separate table having the field values that are allowed for a given security class with a lookup() script that uses the form field values within the filter for that security table. It's doable. It just matters on the complexity of the matrix that you envision as to which approach you desire to use.

Tom: I see now, thanks for taking the time to clarify things for me.

Is there an example of such matrix that I can study? I searched this board but could not come up with something similar. If there is no example available , I would appreciate it very much if you could indicate the steps/functions to achieve this. Thanks in advance.

I am not certain that the attached samples are exactly what you need but might help a bit--they are samples that have been posted here on the messageboard that I saved in my help file......they all deal with login and security. There was a fairly extensive post on this also I remember but would have to search again to find it--

                  Hi Mike:
I can't open any of them, they are all password protected. I was hoping to find a txt file with the password with the zipped files.

One of the logon scripts that Mike shows in his post is one that I posted awhile ago. He shows it as the one with TomB after it.

                    The user name is admin
                    the password is alpha

Thanks Tom! Obviously I have not tried to open them before--I will try and search down the logon and passwords for the other 2--maybe Tom Cone can remember which of his samples this is as I did rename the sample which makes it a bit more difficult.

Just got the Login sample one---for Charlie Crimmel the password is crimmel
