Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Phantom records in table and report...

    All-
I have a table with 254 records. When I enter the default browse and land on the first record my record number in the toolbar reads 457. I'm showing a total of 460 deleted records in the table statistics. After deleting records from the table is there a record count reset?

These blank records are showing up in reports run on this table. Suggestions?

    Thank you in advance.

No. After deleting records and packing the table the record count is reset.

This shouldn't happen. Marked records might appear in a report but deleted records shouldn't.

This is the record number of the record being displayed (or the "current" record in a browse). Perhaps you've specified an order expression (or have sorted the table) so that the records are not being displayed in order by their record number. The record number is a number representing the physical location of the record in the table. It has nothing to do with which record appears first when a form or browse opens. That's determined by the order expression (sort order) controlling the display.

As explained in the helps, and has been true for DBF files since they were invented more than 20 years ago, when a record is deleted it's not physically removed from the table. You must pack the table to remove records previously deleted. Packing will result in new record numbers for any records that move to a new physical locatioin in the table when the deleted records are removed.

        Thanks Stan,
I packed the table and it did correct the record count in the default browse.

I ran the report and I still have the same issue with numerous phantom records or blank records with zeros in numeric fields corrupting the report.

        Any additional suggestions??? Kim

Kim, it's beginning to sound like you should consider posting a zipped copy of the database here for us to check. Include directions for us to follow to see the specific problem. -- tom

You don't mention having a set so it doesn't sound like your issue is described here.

Tom's advice about attaching a sample is probably the best bet. You could open the default browse and make the controlling index <record number order> to make sure you don't have unintended records that are being flitered out of your custom views.

              Thanks Stan and Tom,
I do have a set that the report is based on. I am filtering base on criteria at the time of the report. Out of curiosity, I printed the report to see how many records (blank or not) printed. There are a total of 260 records. The filtered record amount for the report was 116. The report contained a total of 280 lines. No immediate corelations. I tried an simple test report on the table (using the genie to define) and had the same symtoms. It didn't appear to try and print as many blank records. The test report only put out 227 lines on the same filter of 116. Frustrating, thoughts?

                Additional info:

I've checked the set structure and there are no filters or sort orders included in the set link definitions. I'm hesitant to zip and send the db... sensitive data.

                Thoughts?

Thanks again for your help it is greatly appreciated!

Zip up your sample from Alpha's toolbar, unzip your sample on your machine as a different project, open up with your development Alpha and delete sensitive data, replace with enough dummy data to illustrate problem, rezip and attach here.

Open the default browse for the set. You will see one line for each parent-child "composite" record.

The filtered record amount for the report was 116.
That is probably the parent table record count. Check the link I sent earlier for Designing Reports for One to Many sets.
