Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Saving a file to a CD

A client has asked if Alpha5 can create a file to be copied to a CD to distibute to dealers with a list of products with pictures of the products.
I don't see a way in Alpha5 to accomplish something like this. He does not want to post the file/catalog on the net.

I wonder if you might try creating a report that includes the list and photos, then save it to disk as PDF? Alpha can't burn the CD, but it ought to be able to create the file you need to put on the CD.

      Tom,
I looked at making a report but I wasn't sure one could add a different picture to each item. The example I saw showed the same .bmp/.jpg attached to each record.

Alpha Five is not a desktop publishing program, but it can include photos in reports. Even if you find it difficult to format the report to client specs Alpha should be able to output data that a desktop publisher could pick up and use.

Look at the flowers table in the web application demo - it has an image reference field with the photos for each record in the flower table and you can then build a report that shows those photos along with the other info in the table.

What example did you look at?

maybe I'm missing something but don't you create a field in the table and add each photo to it? Then you just include this field in the report.

              Al and Robert,
I was looking at the example of creating a report and adding a picture in the Alpha FIve V9 Total training DVD from Steve Working.
I was thinking earlier today that a pic can be included in the table definition.
So I assume I can make a report with a table containing part #'s and pictures and save that as a PDF file.
              Thanks to all who replied.

as long as the field that you add is a type of image reference field

I haven't seen Workings work... - sorry I've waited a long time to quote that..

Is the field type in his example an image reference field? I'll bet it is...

search on Picture then select BMP in the A5 help. It gives a full description for how to add the field for the pictures.

Re: Saving a file to a CD

I didn't read the details in the other references so maybe I missed it but here's an easy trick that might be useful....

Get the folder that Windows uses for its built-in "burn to CD" routine:

                      CD_Burning = registry.sys_get( "HKey_current_user\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\CD Burning" )

Then just save whatever you want to be on the CD to that folder and tell the user to just use the built-in Windows method to burn the CD after all the necessary files have been stored.

Disclaimer: I don't believe this method was available prior to XP and I've never tested it in Vista.
