Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can't edit set, sais it's open

I want to edit a set and its field rules. When I open it in design mode, I can change the order expression but when I hit ok, I get this error message.

"Could not create/edit link. It is possible that the child table was opened in another session. Alpha Five needs exclusive access to the child table. Try exiting from Alpha Five, and then create the link again.

Internal error message was: Not an open table"

I know it's not open elsewhere, this database sits calmly on my local drive while I'm developing it.

    Any ideas?

Oh and I deleted the .MUF and .RMUF files but it didn't help.

What are the names of the tables?
      There can be only one.

        tb_shots.dbf
        tb_sequences.dbf
        tb_projects.dbf
        tb_tasks.dbf
        tb_taskress.dbf
        tb_task_timesheets.dbf
        tb_tasknames.dbf
        tb_notes.dbf
        tb_versions.dbf
        tb_version_comments.dbf

The table tb_notes is linked in three places in the set with different aliases:
        TB_TASKTIMESHEETS_NOTES
        TB_TASK_NOTES
        TB_SHOTS_NOTES

To insure that there are no remaining locks on any tables, just reboot the computer. If you still get the error, right click each table and Edit Structure. That needs an exclusive lock, so you know if the table is free of locks.

If all tables are OK and you still have the problem, I would rebuild the set.

Ok, I deleted the multiple tb_notes links in the set.
Then, when I re-add the first link, all is well. But when I add the second one, I get the error message.
Is there anything I should be careful about when adding the same table multiple times in a set?

I just found that the problem comes from my order expression
              IIF(VALID,"A","B")+INVERT(CDATE(DATE))+FROM

When I don't enter it, all is well. But that's precisely what I need to edit in my set.

Anything I put in the order expression produces the error.

Is this the linking key, or the child order expression? If it is the linking key,try making it a calculated field and link on the calc field.

Doesn't seem likely to be the problem but the documentation states...

Use IIF() instead of IF() when using the expression in an Xbasic script.
Might cause trouble in an order expression.

                      This expression is missing something:
                      IFF(VALID something missing here,"A","B")
VALID must equal something for the expression to evaluate.

                      ??Perhaps??:
IIF(valid=.t.,"A","B") assuming valid is a logical field.

                        Code:
                        valid = .t.
                        ? iif(valid,"A","B")

                        Code:
                        valid = .f.
                        ? iif(valid,"A","B")

.. and if, as assumed, valid is a logical field, then IFF does not offer anything more than IF does. The field can't be true "beyond the shadow of a doubt using IFF", but only true "based on preponderance of evidence" using IF.
It's either true or false, there are no shading of this reality.
