Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    filtering a table lookup

    I have a form based on a table set linking two tables. Table one is a project description and table two lists parts selected for the project in a browser on the form.

    The user can add items to parts list table using a table lookup that shows items on a master parts list table.

    How do I filter the content of the master parts lookup window? Filters are not available. I would like to be able to add various filter conditions, showing a limited set of choices in the lookup window.

    Thanks, Marcus

    Not understood. Take a look at the field rules for the product_id field in the AlphaSports invoice_items table. Filters are available for a table lookup.
    There can be only one.

      What data do you want to use to filter... something on the main form, or something on the browse?

        Hi Marcus,

        Do you have parts that can only belong to a particular project?

          Niether of the tables on the form. I want to filter the pop-up, lookup reference table.

          I am trying to do something similar to the product 'add-record' drop-down lookup used on the alpha-sport, product invoice form
          but want to filter the list of 'add records' choices at run-time.

          Maybe I can add a variable to the lookup field rules that will set a dynamic filter to the lookup based on a variable populated during run-time??

            You lost me with that one.
            Are you trying to filter the lookup table values to generate a filtered list of choices from a third table (look up table) for the user to select for entry into the Parts child record or are you trying to do something else? Did you understand Stan's response that directed you to where the filter expression for the lookup table is entered?

              Re: filtering a table lookup

              Ok... here's how I did it.. hope it's what you're looking for... I used the Alphasports database for testing.

              On the New Item button of the Invoices form, goto to the OnPush event.
              Before the browse1.new_record() I added...

              Dim Global varProd as C
              varProd = "Alpha"

              You're going to have to figure out where and what you want to declare a variable... but I'm doing it here just for testing. As long as it's Global you should be ok - maybe you don't need to use a global scope - I'm not sure.

              In the Field Rules for the Invoice_Items tables, for the PRODUCT_ID, in the Filter section (under Display Order) I put...

              Left(Description,5) = varProd

              So now, when I add a new record my dropdown list contains on those Products with a Description starting "Alpha"... a nicely filterd list.

              Hope that helps.

              David

                Re: filtering a table lookup

                Thanks for that. It is exactly what I was trying to do.

                Now I am going to try to set up a series of check boxes to change varProd when the form is running so I can have on-the-fly access to a variety of different filter sets.

                Question:
                What varProd variable can I use to display all items again?
                i.e. turn off the varProd filter.
                Thanks.

                  I'm not having much luck on that one... anyone else?

                  I'd like to do this...

                  dim tbl as P
                  dim fld as P
                  dim rules as P
                  tbl = table.open("invoice_items")
                  fld = tbl.field_get("Product_Id")
                  rules = fld.rules_get()
                  rules.Lookup.Filter = null_value()

                  But it seems the Filter is not a property that can be set. Anyone?

                  Be nice if the filter could be turned on or off... but I'm not familiar enough with A5 yet to see how this can be done. I'll bet someone else here knows.

                    Re: filtering a table lookup

                    Code:
                    dim varProd as C = "alpha"
                    dim description as C = "alphasport"
                    dim vfilter as C

                    vfilter =[COLOR="Red"] iif(varProd <> "all","Left(Description,5) = "+quote(varProd),".t.")[/COLOR]
                    ? vfilter
                    = Left(Description,5) = "alpha"

                    'change the value
                       varProd ="all"

                    vfilter = iif(varProd <> "all","Left(Description,5) = "+quote(varProd),".t.")
                    ? vfilter
                    = ".t."
                    The part in red is what you should need in the filter. The rest is there to test out the if statement.

                      Re: filtering a table lookup

                      Very nice... I was trying to use an IIF statement in the filter but I just couldn't get it...

                      I had to enter the Filter expression as...

                      iif(varProd <> "all",Left(Description,5) =varProd,.t.)

                      without the quotes around the Left statment and .t.

                      I was sure I tried something like this... must have had the syntax messed up... thanks Mike... excellent.
