Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Question about sets and child records

I have defined a set with one child table.

What is the best way to prevent unwanted child records from being added to a table in a set. On one tab of a tabbed form I have an embedded browse of child records. If I open that tab and then page to a different parent and then go back to the previous parent, there is a blank child record. This only occurs if there are no other child records for the parent. Also, the addition of the unwanted child does not obey field rules.

Apparently when I open the tab with the child browse the child table is in enter mode if no child records are found. ???

What is the best way to prevent the addition of blank child records.

Re: Question about sets and child records

    Hi Tommy,

Without going into a lot of coding, have one of the fields in the browse a Must fill. Set this uo in field rules. When you try to leave the browse without that field filled you will get an error message. This will then force you to Cancel Changes. Having done that you will then be able to navigate to another record.

Remember, once you go into the browse you have now saved the parent and are in enter mode for the Browse.

    Hope that helps.

Part of the problem is that it is not obeying field rules in this instance.

I believe what you want to do is this.

Set your browse to not allow new records
Add a button under your browse - "Add Record"
Add a couple of scripts to this button:
        1. Set Properties of Objects - your browse - restrict_enter - False
this turns the browse on for entering records
        2. Active an Object - activate the browse - this sets focus to the browse.

Now you're in your browse, a new record is available.

I have to go, but there's a step needed to pop down to the new record in the browse.

Now... when you leave the browse... or the main record... set the browse property back to restrict_enter = True.

Is this what you want to do?

Please tell us what field rule is not being obeyed.

          We'll promptly discipline it.... ;)

Actually a little more detail would help a lot..

Field rule = Data entry, field required. It completely ignores that rule.

Re: Question about sets and child records

              Tommy,
I could not reproduce a child record automatically being added when the focus moves from the tabbed object child embedded browse to a navigation object which changes the parent record in focus. Firstly, when a parent table record which does not have a child record is in focus, and the tab with the embedded browse is pressed, simply choosing that tab which contains the embedded child browse does not automatically give focus to the child browse. At this point the form is still in View mode. Secondly, even if focus is given to the child browse and the form goes into Enter mode, moving focus off the child browse and changing the parent record in focus changes the form mode to view mode and does not result in a commit event that saves a child record.

There is something more going on with your set up that is the culprit.

              Later:
Play with attached and see if it does the same as you are describing with your application

                Mike,

I tried the same thing that you did yesterday and I could not reproduce the problem.

There has to be some problem with my set up but I don't see it.

I know I have done the same thing in the past and everything worked ok.

                Thanks for the help everyone.
