Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: link pdf files to a record

How would you relate the pdf files to a customer if you had to say it in English?

These pdf files have the customer last name in them?
These pdf files were created on the customer birthday?
These pdf files have the same astrological sign as the customer?
These pdf files once dated females from the same sorority?

    i have a set setup

Re: link pdf files to a record

        Ok, we're getting somewhere.

You have a table with, among other things, a customer_id field. I say customer_id where you said customer id because you can't have a field named "customer id". You want to link "many pdf files" to each record. Let's assume, since you don't specify, that each of the pdf files has the customer_id as the first part of the pdf file name.

and you want to "link" these three files to the record with the customer_id "ABC". What should the link do or allow you to do?

The way I have done this in the past is to create a table to hold the name and location of the files. The structure would be something like

            CUSTOMER_ID - links to customer
            PATHTOFILE - i.e. c:\pdfs\file123.pdf
            TITLE - describes the file

and link this table to the customer via a set. I usually create a form to enter the details of the file with the PATHTOFILE as a "File Select" type so you can simpy browse to the file and store the path.

I also incorporate a browse on this form with the "on double click" event set to open the file therefore you can simply run down the browse - double click - and the file opens.

This can be used to link all types of file to a customer record, sounds, images, spreadsheets, documents etc.

You set the table field type to character of appropriate width. You place the field on your form. You change the control type (display mode) in the field object's properties on the form.

What Alpha version are you using? You should see 20 choices in the field type box in the object properties dialog.

Absolutely no idea what this might mean.

We aren't talking about images, we are speaking of pdf files which are not images.

                        You asked...

and I answered that question. The field to hold the PATHTOFILE information must be a character field.

                          Hi Stan

This thread more or less explains what I am trying to achieve, the only difference is it refers to a desktop setup, whereas I am working in a web app. You appear to be an Alpha Guru, are you aware of any simple methods whereby I could insert a full file path into a field whilst working within a webgrid? I have searched the message board but some of the suggestions are a little above my beginner skill level

Many thanks for any assistance you can offer

Sorry, no experience with "grid", "webgrid", "webapp". Suggest you start a new thread in the appropriate version of the Web Application Server area of the message board.
