Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Newbie ?'s -- #1 Am I missing a CD?

I'm just trying to create an installer package of a little db that I created in A5v9 to see how big it ends up and I get the message that I need to install the runtime first. Besides the Alpha5v9 Enterprise CD, I received the Run Engine CD, (which I understand is different from the runtime), and the Application Server CD for the web. I have not installed the run engine or the appserver yet. Just trying to see what I can do with Desktop apps for now. Does installing the run engine install the runtime so that I can create a package? If so what do people use who don't purchase the run engine. I can't seem to locate any information that says where to install the runtime from. Any suggestons would be appreciated!

Also, let me know your experience: how big does a simple little db with no data in it end up being when compiled or generated into a runtime?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Kinsley,

Does installing the run engine install the runtime so that I can create a package?
    Yes.

Most messages you get from Alpha are correct, in this case it is totally correct when it says you need to install the Runtime/Run Engine. The way it works is that you use the developer to build your application and from within that build the installer. This has to be loaded on your machine for Alpha to create the EXE file which is then used on your customers machine to install both the Runtime and your application.

what do people use who don't purchase the run engine
Not quite sure I understand your question here. If they dont have Alpha full version or Runtime loaded then they cant run an application.

The size of the EXE will be at least 30MB.

There is a PDF with Licence info when you install onto your machine.

All the Runtime does, is prevent your users from being able to make changes to your application. It is up to you to control how the user, uses your application and data. By that I mean, you design all your forms to prevent the user from getting to the control panel. You encrypt the data, which prevents it from being used outside of the application, like in Excel. You password control everything to prevent you user getting a full version of Alpha and opening your application. In other words, you stay in control.

    I hope that has helped.

      Thanks for the clarification, Keith.

I was thinking the run engine was a completely different thing from the runtime developer. I'm coming from Filemaker, and I'm a little out of my comfort zone for now.

      I appreciate your help.

        Hi Kingsley,

Not wishing to be pedantic, the Run Engine and Runtime are different things to the Full Version "Developer".

It wont be long be fore you feel right at home and wondered why you didn't make the move a long time ago.
