Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Browse Selected Row color does not appear to work

Browse Selected Row color property does not appear to work

I have updated A5V9 to Build 2077, System Add-Ins to Build 3259, last updated 03/07/09.

I have defined the following for my embedded browse’s row selector colors:

    Row selector: Blue
    Selected: Red
    Focused: Green

As shown in screen 1 below, when the browse is first opened the focus is on the first record and its color is correctly displayed as Green. All the other rows are correctly displayed as Blue.

When I click on the second row in the browse, the selector button does not turn Red, but changes to Green. What do I need to do to change the color of the row’s button to Red, or is this a bug?

Has anyone else had this problem?

Attached is a zipped file of a single table and a single browse that demonstrates the problem. Could someone please open up the form, click on a row and confirm that the selector "button" is not changing to RED as specified.

    Thanks,

      Bob

I don't have V9 so if the selected property of the row selector changed in V9 then disregard

However, it would seem that the row selector is working properly. When the browse opens the first record in the browse has focus and therefore the row selector is green, if you cursor down a row, that row now has focus and the row selector is green. If you hold down the shift key and then drag the cursor down the browse, the row selector will turn red for those rows that have been selected but do not have focus. If you read the definition of the selected color property (see the first thumbnail) it tells you just that - so I guess there is confusion as to what selected means and what focused means.

So I would say that the row selector color is working just as was intended - but I have been wrong before.

        Tom,

I could not find clear documentation on this issue.

I followed your suggestion and found it works, but A5's design is not that used by commercial ActiveX and .net grid controls. Bummer!

To me, clicking on the "button" on the left of the browse means selecting that row. This is the way other commercial browse controls work.

Commercial controls typically behave like this:
Using your arrow keys or page up/down keys repositions that cursor and invokes the Focused color.
Using the mouse click, should invoke the selected color

Did you notice that in the background color of the line in my A5 example changed to pale yellow?

If the background color of the row changes color when the "button" is clicked, it is unreasonable to expect that the row "button" color would follow the same convention.

Note that in the screenprint of a commercial grid control below, both the "button" color and the row background color change when the row is selected. This behavior works whether selecting multiple lines or a single line. I was hoping that with all the rewrite effort Alpha has expended on its browse control, we could have have the same result. Guess not.

In the example below, the selection was a simple single mouse click, no need to use Shift or Ctrl keys to select a row. Simple, easy, intuitive.

        Thanks again for the clarification.

          Bob

I can see where you are coming from - but I guess it is alpha definition of selected and focused. I would have to agree with you that in general terms, when the browse opened the first row of the browse would have focus and therefore would be green. Then just by clicking on the row selector of the next row should not give focus to that row, the row selector should then be red - and then when you click in the column, you are then at that time giving focus to that row. That is just a logical assumption but evidently the term selected in this case is for multiple selections.

I can follow the logic for selected and multiple selections and the row selector would show red, but then the final stop of the cursor, that row would then have focus and it would be green - you would think that should be red too.

I do know that I have played around with the row colors and selector colors and somehow have gotten something that looked good - but it took a long time of trial and error - which should not be the case. Because of that oddity, I have some pretty bland browses in my apps since I don't want to take the time (lazy) to try and try again.

But I guess I'm going to say that Alpha would not recognize this as a bug - poor design on there part -- MAYBE --, but working the way it should. Logical or not.

Sorry I couldn't be more of a help.

Edit. I was typing my reply while you were editing your post and did not see the edit until just now.

            Tom,

Isn't it interesting that Alpha software copies the tab appearance of Excel spreadsheets, but doesn't allow developers to adopt the spreadsheet's simple convention of changing the color BOTH of a row selector "button" and the row background color when a row selector is clicked on to select it.

This is the behavior that is almost instinctive to zillions of users.

Wouldn't it be nice if Alpha could accomodate such a common idiom?

Note that I did not press Ctrl or Shift to select the row below in an Excel spreadsheet.
