Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Combo box does not auto-fill the rest of the entry

Im finding a difference in the way combo boxes function in the latest patch release (2085-3261). The combo box does not auto-fill the rest of the entry for me. While I was using the previous patch (1522-3187 from June 2008), I could type into the combo box and A5 would auto-fill the rest of the name of the first match it found in the source (a table). For example, I type Th and Thadius Johnson appears in the combo box. As soon as I type o, then Thomas Smith appears in the combo box.

However, with the latest patch, A5 appears to auto-fill the name, but the name is visible for only a moment, then the combo box shows only the letters Ive typed: Tho. If I open the drop-down menu, the name Thomas Smith is right below the combo box, and I can select it. However, my users are complaining about the loss of the auto-fill feature.

Ive gone back to the 1847_3216 patch from November 2008, but the functioning is the same as the current patch. Can anyone suggest a solution? Thank you.

    Hi Ray,

    Have you rebuilt/refreshed the Indexes?

Hav you tried using Progressive Lookup dialog?

Yes, I've rebuilt/refreshed the indexes and still had the same result.

To test whether it was some strange fluke, I reinstalled and repatched a couple of times on 2 different machines. When I went back to the old patch, it worked fine. But when I moved to the more recent patches, it had the problem I described. My network users (using shadow databases) get the same results.

I can move toward switching to a Progressive Lookup dialog, but before I do that I want to understand how the combo box is supposed to work. It seemed to have a Progressive Lookup already built into the way it functioned on the old patch, but not with the more recent patches. Keith, do your combo boxes have the progressive lookup behavior? If yes, what patch are you using?

        Hi Ray,

I'm using the latest patch, released today.

How are you using the combo box?

Also, if you dont mind me asking, why are you updating your clients machine when the app they have is working and does not need a fix?

Ray, I'm finding the same behaviour... the item found in the combo box list is displayed for a split second then disappears... then dropping down the combo box the item is highlighted. I've just started putting combo boxes into my app now - I'm at that stage so I haven't seen any other behaviour. I'd let A5 know about this... document it with the patch #'s.

Re: Combo box does not auto-fill the rest of the entry

Kieth, thanks for responding so quick.

You asked: How are you using the combo box:
            Choices are computed automatically
            Source is a table

You asked: Why are you updating your client machines?
I needed a fix for a bug: In my old patch, if a date field is Read Only, but the user selects the pop-up calendar icon, they can edit the date.

            David,
thanks for reporting the similar behavior. It helps me to know whether it's just my set up.

Re: Combo box does not auto-fill the rest of the entry

              Hi,

This is from the release notes of the latest patch.
Form Layouts - Combo Boxes - Typing the first letter of a choice in the combo box did not always correctly synchronize with the first choice in the combo box that matched the letter that was typed.
Maybe that was part of your problem?
