Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Merge to Microsoft Word

I'm trying to use the mail merge feature in Alpha Five V9.0.

At this point, I'm at the very beginning. I have my form open. Per the instructions for Microsoft Word Integration in the help screens, I click on the <Word> icon which opens the Microsoft Mail Merge dialog box. I select 'New Word Template' just to get something started. I have Current Record Only Selected (though I have tried both options) and then click <OK>. I get an error message back immediately that says "Data to merge with Word was not found. 'c:\users\bill\appdata\local\temp\a5mailmerge.txt' .

Truthfully, I have no idea what to do next.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Bill

    Re: Merge to Microsoft Word

    Hi Bill,
After you select the New Word Template and select Okay, you should see a box telling you that A5 is connecting with Word. If that doesn't happen then you have an issue with Word. If Word opens then you need to place your field holders onto the document and save that template.

Must be an issue with Word then. I'm not getting anything that says connecting to Word. Any ideas on what might not be working correctly?

      Thanks,

        Re: Merge to Microsoft Word

Here are a few things to try....

Is Word installed in the Program File folder?

Try opening Word then try the merge from A5 to see what happens.

Another thought is to click on Existing Word Templates and then in the box click on <More...> then Managae list and navigate to a dummy Word document, then click the OK button.

          Re: Merge to Microsoft Word

Word is in the default installation folder for Office. I tried it with Word open, no difference. I tried to navigate to a dummy template. No difference there either.

I'm beginning to wonder if I should reinstall Office 2003 and see if that clears up the problem.

Yeah, that's not a bad idea. Other than that I don't know what to tell you. Maybe try to re-install A5 as well??

              Re: Merge to Microsoft Word

Well, now I'm really not sure what to do. I had a virtual machine (XP Pro) with Office pro 2003 installed. There was no copy of Alpha five on that VM. I installed the demo version of Alpha and tried it... same problem. I did test with Excel through and that worked without a hiccup. I'm not sure that uninstalling / reinstalling will accomplish anything for me.

I think I'll see if anyone else comes up with some suggestions before I give that a try.

              Thanks,

              Bill

                Re: Merge to Microsoft Word

Well... I think I found the solution (or at least the reason for the problem). The database was created from data stored in Access. I think there's something that came over that Alpha didn't like. I just happened to try another database that was built from scratch in Alpha and it worked fine. I've looked but haven't found the Access / Alpha problem yet but the merge problem isn't a true alpha / word problem.

                Thanks for the help.

                Regards,
