Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Tabbed Form - one set or table?

I am using a tabbed form with 14 tabs to record information regarding bowel cancer. (see attachment) I initially had set up all of my tables in a large set with associated links etc and thought I was well on my way but read on this forum that this was not recommended.

I have now made up a smaller set for the top section "Patient Details" and the first 3 tabs, Index, Address and Alias.

I cannot see how to add more sets or tables to enable me to populate the other tabs. I have searched the messageboard but have not been able to find a solution.

How do I get access to the data fields in the other tables. It seems that Alpha only allows one table or set per form from what I can see.

Any suggestions or solutions please. I dont think I can see the forest for the trees.

    Hi Murray,

I'm not surprised you cant see the wood for the trees, you are trying to plant the forest all in one go.

The set would be very simple, Patient's details=Parent table. Appointments and treatments = Child table 1:Many.

From what you have said it seems that you have created the form on a single table, and now you want to create the set and want to add all the child fields to the form. Simple, copy the form to the new set. All the fields from the Set will be available for the form.

Re: Tabbed Form - one set or table?

      Thanks for your response Keith,
The tabbed form is based on a single set of 3 tables (see attachment) which are Person, Address and Alias name. This all works fine to populate the top Patient Details section and the first 3 tabs from the left. My problem is that I have another 9 or so tables which I need to get at to allocate fields to the other 11 tabs.

Is this possible or do I have to use another approach such as make another set and then link that to another form?

Re: Tabbed Form - one set or table?

        Hi Murray,

I like to keep things very simple, because that is what I am.

You have show the set with a Person in the parent table and child table linked 1:N for the address, does this mean a Person can have many addresses?

If you want a Person to have say Home address and Work address then all those fields would be in the Person table.

        Same again for Alias Name.

I would suggest you restructure the Person table and think very carefully about the fields you need in the child table. You will not need another 9 tables, when I'm sure that most of the fields could be in a single child table.

Have a good look at AlphaSports and see how that is structured.
