Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Using ActiveX controls

Are you putting your code into the Calendar's double-click event?

Since FMS designs for Access I would think they're going to go after Access specific calls. Maybe it will work... I download the trial and have a go at it.

There are a lot of different degrees of polish... I haven't had the need for a splitter control but used more of the other stuff FMS puts out plus a few more. Resizing is one of those items I would love to have - it just doesn't exsit well outside the VB world. Although I haven't tried it with A5 yet. Let us know what you find for other splitter bars you're trying.

      Re: Using ActiveX controls

<<For example, double clicking on CodeJock's Xtreme Calendar Pro to display a message box "The double click event works". Alpha Five does not produce and error -- it just doesn't do anything.>>

I'm a little puzzld by this too. The double click event will certainly display the message box but if you want something to happen in the calendar as a result of the double click, you'll have to write your own code.

        Re: Using ActiveX controls

        Finian,

Alpha Five recognizes the double click event, which is good, but does nothing with it.

I right click on the calendar control, then Events>ActiveXEvent
Alpha Five creates code for all events for the control. I deleted the events that it didn't need, leaving only the double click event.

        Here is my code:

        Code:
        function dblclick as v ()
             msgbox("Double click event appears OK")
        end function
I've also turned the debugger on, and no errors are returned.
The only problem is that the message box didn't display.

          Problem solved

          Hello world!

          I found the problem.

          Alpha Five generates this code

          Code:
          function dblclick as v ()
          end function
Alpha Five inserts a space between the v and the () characters.

I removed the space and now when I double click on the calendar, it works as shown in the screen print below.

Despite that it appears to work, I don't believe that the space between the function type and the parenthesis would make any difference. I have never seen in any of Alpha's parsing of syntax that a space has ever made a difference.

I suspect it was a restart of Alpha 5 or something else. Alpha 5 can be very finicky about Declare, Declarestruct and active X controls after you make a change. That was the main reason I created the CSDA Code Utility, to restart Alpha 5 clean, and restore all the windows. (After 50 of these in an hour, the manual process was just too exahusting!)

The best proof is to start with a working version, then add a space and re-save. If you want to be real sure, close Alpha 5 and restart and try again with the new version. I'll bet it will continue to work. If I am wrong, post some sample code and I'll check it.

              Re: Using ActiveX controls

              Ira,

This is really weird. I went back an inserted a space as follows:
              Code:
              [FONT="Courier New"][B]function dblclick as v ()[/B][/FONT]
I am pleased to report it works now with the space inserted.

But what I can't understand is why did Alpha Five needed to be "woke up".
For weeks I have played with this and the double click event does not work.

Yesterday, on a lark, I removed the space -- and it worked.
Today, I inserted the space and it continues to work.

              Very, very strange behavior.

I'm not surprised, but as I said, it was not the space.

It's very hard to tell you why, without seeing the whole sequence you went through. It is most likely something else you changed that you didn't think was related or you restarted Alpha 5 after an edit/save and then it worked.

I will tell you that if you use the debugger, it seems to (at times anyway) to have the version of the code (possibly from an internal cache) that existed at the time the debugger was opened. So if you make changes after that, you may not be able to see them. After a couple of edit cycles, it eventually does get the new version, or just close the debugger (which unfortunately means recreating the watch variables - which I hate to do!), and the new version takes effect.

Any changes to Declare/Declarestruct/active X controls may not really take effect until a restart of Alpha 5, so changes there can fool you into thinking it is not working, where in reality, a simple A5 restart was all that was required.

Also, in a few cases, I have seen uses of Active X and API that were not working destabilize windows enough that simply restarting A5 was not enough, you had to reboot Windows.

So to sum up, as a minimum, restart Alpha 5 after an edit/save if you are having a problem that you want to confirm.
