Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Set Value in New Record

    I have a one to many relationship of Projects (one) and Tasks (many). My form has an embedded browse of Tasks.

    I do not want my user to enter a new record directly in the browse. Instead, I have a button on the form that opens a form to add a new record in the tasks table that will link back to the Projects table via a Task_Proj_ID field.

    I am attempting to set a variable to the ProjectID value on the Projects form and then set the Task_Proj_ID value in the new record to match the Project_Id from the calling form.

    I seem to be making this more difficult than it should be.

    Hi Dale,

    Check out Form.ViewLinked()

    And this link should help.

    Sample code tested in Alpha Sports
    Code:
    dim linkdef as c
    linkdef = "invoice_number ="+s_quote(Invoice2.value)
    dim p as p
    p=form.ViewLinked("Invoice_Items",linkdef,"","","dialog_newrecord")
    P.close()

      Re: Set Value in New Record

      Keith,

      Thanks for your response.

      I read the link you provided. I also placed the code you supplied on the Alpha Sports Invoice Form and it works fine.

      I then attached the following code to the onPush event of a button on my Projects form:

      dim linkdef as c
      linkdef = "Proj_Id ="+s_quote(Proj_ID.value)

      dim p as p
      p=form.ViewLinked("Task Data",linkdef,"","","dialog_newrecord")

      p.close()

      When I run the script I get the following error code: p.close(); argument is incorrect data type.

      Not sure why this is happening

        Hi Dale,

        I dont know why you are getting the error message from the Close() function. It has been put there to close the form that was opened as dialog.

        Try renaming the form to Task_Data. Not sure if the space is causing the problem.

            Keith,

            When I change the form name to Task_Data I get a form not found error message. I forgot the _ when initially creating the form.

            I am hesitant to rename the form from Task Data to Task_Data and destroy all of my other references.

            Any ideas on how to rectify this?

              Proj_ID is character data type in both parent and child tables.

                  Still getting the p.close(); argument is incorrect data type error.

                  Here is my code:

                  dim linkdef as c
                  linkdef = "Proj_Id ="+ s_quote(Proj_ID.value)

                  dim p as p
                  p=form.ViewLinked("Task_Data",linkdef,"","","dialog_newrecord")

                  p.close()

                    Re: Set Value in New Record

                    Would be really good if you could package up the couple of forms and tables so we could have a look... that usually gets the problem fixed immediately.

                        Re: Set Value in New Record

                        where's the documentation on the form.viewlinked() method? Thanks.

                        I'm not a fan of using undocumented methods, but if you want to use form.viewlinked() then change your code to:

                        Code:
                        dim linkdef as c
                        linkdef = "[COLOR="Red"]Task[/COLOR]_Proj_Id ="+ s_quote(Proj_ID.value)  [COLOR="red"]'use link field name from child table[/COLOR]

                        dim p as p
                        p=form.ViewLinked("Task Data",linkdef,"","","dialog_newrecord")

                        p.close()
                        Dale, next time you post a sample database please include directions to your form, and instructions for how to trigger the fault. It prevents wasted time wandering through your database looking for a specific form and button.

                          Thank you for the advice. I will provide more information with uploaded files in the future.
