I am very new to Alpha 5 version 9 platinum.
I am trying to setup a very simple invoice entry type database. I just need to enter the invoice number, date, first and last name, type work, and amount paid. I need to collect sales tax or not.
The amount paid is the problem because of the sales tax issue. I want to have one field where I enter either "y" for yes or "n" for no to answer the question, "is this taxable". If the answer is "y" then I need to fill in another field (i.e., TAX_PAID) with the correct amount of tax.
Here is the process I need to have the database do:
After the general stuff, I will have a field that is TOTAL_INV_AMT which is used to calculate tax.
The next field will be the question: taxable or not where user enters y or n. Then if Y then the TAX_PAID field is filled in with the calculated amount of 7% multplied by the TOT_INV_AMT. If the anwer is N then value 0 is entered into TAX_PAID field.
The next field is user entered AMT_PAID. There are many times where we collect less than the total. Here is an example: if the total invoice is $1000 and is taxable, the TOTAL_INV_AMT field would have 1000.00 entered and the next field would be $70.00 (7% times 1000). Then in the AMT_PAID field the entry might be 600.00 which is the actual amount collected. Then there is another field named INCOME which is a calculated amount of AMT_PAID minus the calculated amount in the TAX_PAID field.
Sorry for the rambling, I am just trying to be clear.
So here is what I need to know:
how do I write the formula to calculate sales tax or not based on the "y" or "n" in the SALE_TAX field and then place that value into the TAX_PAID field?
Then how do I write the formula that subtracts the TAX_PAID from the AMT_PAID with the results placed in the INCOME field?
I actually had this setup and working for several years using Alpha 4 but now I cannot remember how it is done and I cannot find the answer in the help files.
Hopefully someone can help me with this.
Thanks,
Chuck
