Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Out of Memory in Version 9

I had a server problem and had to restore a database. When I did I have a field that is duplicated adn some others that are the wrong type. If I try and change them, it starts and after a while it says "Out of Memory". Will not change. I am using Version 9.0. I have copied and renamed but same thing.

Sounds like your backup is corrupted.

Do you have an earlier backup?

      Al,

We do but the data in this file is the newest. Plus all my changes are here. If I could keep the data somehow, then I could maybe recreate the dbf file and inport saved data? I know this one is corrupt but was hoping for some kind of salvation. The set still works but I know it will crap out if I do not fix.

        Ted:
        1. open the backup file (don't restore using alpha) with winzip and extract the files to a temporary directory.
        2. create a new database *adb in that temp directory and open it. DON'T OPEN THE OLD ONE IN THE ZIP FILE
        3. try adding the dbf/set files to the new adb and see if you can open them
        4. begin adding the ddd ddm and ddx / set sem sex files one table at a time and test to see if they open OK
        5. you can test the old autoexec (if you had one) and other code by first adding the library to the new adb, and if they are OK, copy them over (i.e. import them)

I can open the files and they work, however there is a duplicate field and some mismatched field types. If I try to change it gives me the out of memory? I am not sure what that is all about.

why don't you try to add new fields for the one(s) that are messed up, run an update operation on the new fields for the data in the messed up fielks, then create a new table with the 'good' fields and the new fields, then run an append operation?

John, You mean create a duplicate and then append? I have tried to add fields but get the low memory and it stops. If that is what you mean I will try it.

                No, don't create a duplicate.
open the structure of the problem table
highlight all of the rows/columns by holding down the shift key and pressing the arrow down key
                now, create a new table
now, remove the problem fields (from the new table)
now, save the new table with a different name
now, append the data from the old table to the new table
                excluding the problem/duplicate fields

You may need to build the new target table and then append records in groups until you get all (or most) of them into the new table.

Try the divide and conquer method.

Append the 1st half of the table. if a problem happens, then do the 1st quarter.... if not then do the next quarter.

You may find that the corruption is in a few records. The idea is to isolate them ......

You may also want to invest in a dbase utility like Dsalvage.

                      Ted,
The out of memory error is not the concern really (at least I doubt it)...it could simply be that when Alpha tries to resolve the unresolvable that happens to use memory, it gets to a point where there is not enough memory to go any further. IOW, the error info may not be the cause of the error but a result of it.

Let us know how it turns out for you. Good luck.
                      Mike
