Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 Faxing

    Hi Gang

I am trying to set up the faxing ability from a button on a form. I have noticed that when I try and send a fax, it won't go through. I fax on a regular basis using the windows fax on Xp pro, so I know it is not the way it is setup.

I also noticed when I faxed, it opens adobe and sends it from there. However, all I get is a message saying the line is busy (which is not the case). When I try it again, A5 freezes (at which time I have to use windows task manager to quit the program and re-start) or it kicks me out entirely from the get-go. I later found this was because Adobe does not auto-quit when the fax process is done.

I have read some posts dating back a number of years and this problem occurred back then and still seems to be a problem .... I mean the whole fax thing.

A5 has a great product here ... so when you see this type of work around, it shows up like a bright star on a dark night. I have a fax number field in my client table that is redundant, especially when you have to manually type in the number in the windows fax program.

It appears to me that this process is cumbersome at best. I would rather have an easy to use print/e-mail/fax capability to disseminate my data, than be able to put a google map on a form.

I am not a coder as of yet so Genies will have to do it for me at least for a while; although some might consider me to be an "Alphaholic" in A4 (I know that program like the back of my hand), I am a newbie to A5. I just thought this matter should have been addressed in someway, somehow, some time ago.

Has anyone (re-sellers or A5 Alphaholic programmers) come up with an application that I/we could purchase as an add-in to simplify this process ?

    Thanks

    Rick

      Thanks for the reply Colin.

Its sad. We should never have to go that route. Maybe one of the A5 Alphaholic programmers can come up with something.

Who do you use for e-mail to fax? Is it an ongoing cost or outright purchase for use? Is it reliable?

        Hi Rick,

I am lucky (at least for this), we have RightFax at work, and use its print driver to send faxes. So it is just a one button push to bring up the dialogue. Works every time with no problem.

You might ask/look around for one of the fax programs that you could use the print driver in the fax program to send your faxes. Not sure if there are any reliable ones out there. Used to use winfax 10, but it was not that stable a few years back.

        Regards

          Re: A5 Faxing

          Rick,
The Email -> FAX is provided via our local Telco, , So it's basically bundled with a stack of other products. But as an ongoing Cost it's darn high.
My guess is, that FAX usage worldwide is going the way of TELEX , which means there are few parties willing to develop for them. I also spent a fair bit of time looking for mobile Fax Machines with zilch luck.

I have good success using Snappy Fax.

            http://www.snappysoftware.com/download.htm

Just save your report to a pdf file, SnappyFax will do the rest. Your fax name and number will be automatically inserted.

              Thanks for the replies everyone.

I really like that snappy fax program David. It reminds me somewhat of the old winfax program.

It is just a thought, but maybe Alpha could talk to a company like that; through mutual agreement/arrangement allow alpha to populate the reqired fields in the Snappy fax program. This would allow for a seamless fax by using info from within alpha instead of having to type in phone numbers manually etc.

This would fill in a big gap for alpha, and snappyfax will no doubt sell much more product as well.

For those of you paying for an e-mail->to fax service, you might want to check out

I did some light reading, but this appears to be a program that allows this function without on-going monthly/yearly costs. It is worth a look-see in any event

                Re: A5 Faxing

                Rick,

When you save the report, letter, etc. to a pdf file with the proper format

                - 2142222345_ReceipientName_Y_N_report.pdf - to a folder that is set up as a watch folder in SnappyFax. The name and number is automatically inserted.

The only drawback I have found is you cannot schedule a time to send the fax with this method. However, I send hundreds of faxes daily and the program is reliable.

SnappyFax offers a single user program and a server program. Neither are expensive and the updates are free and the support is as good as A5

                  Oops correction:

Save the report, letter, etc in this format "RecipientName_FaxNumber_R_Y_NameofReport.pdf" and SnappyFax will automatically insert the recipient's name and number.
