Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Append operation error

    Hi

there are 2 active link tables boith are the same definition. members & oldmembers. I am trying to archive from the live system, so i decided to try using an append function ( see the generated xbasic at the bottom of this mail). my master is oldmembers and the trancastion is members.

from the members form I have a button that calls the append operation, and i set the conditon on the button to bee record, ie where number on the form = to number in the members. this all runs fun alpha 5 sees there is one record to append etc, once then I get this rerror return: Error running Append operation, variabler append.m_exp1 expression-field is not regonised.

Maybe i should do it differently? if so how? Still new to this so sorry to be a pain.

    TIA.

    Re: Append operation error

    Hi Florian,

    append.m_field1 = "Number"
    append.m_exp1 = "Membersql->Number"
The error message is telling you that these two fields do not match.

      Keith,

I agree, but in the database they do and this is the generated code not something i coded up.

        Re: Append operation error

        Hi everybody,

I have recently changed from alpha five version 9 to version 10 (development version). I work with a production application which it shows reports. it was developed in alpha five. The application work OK with alpha five v9. But when I want to generate a preview report with alpha five v10, it appears some error messages.

When I press a button to generate a preview report (in alpha five v9 it doesn't happen nothing), it shows that messages, but it generates the report.

Please, if someone knows what it could be.

        Regards

        Milton

          Hi Milton,

Edit and save in V10 and make sure the fields the error message is mentioning are there.

            Re: Append operation error

If these were native Alpha Five tables I'd say using an append operation is like using a cannon to do something that a small calibre rifle could do. Instead of using a filtered append, why not use a script that opens a new instance of the archive table, then enters and saves a copy of the current record, then closes the archive table? If the table structures are the same the example script found in the help file topic: "<TBL>.RECORD_DATA_SET()" should do the trick nicely.

              Thanks Keith and Tom

Keith, I have edited the scripts in alpha five v10 and I make it sure that to change the codes that it appeared in the error messages "Error running Append Operation" and then I save the changes. But it shows the same error messages.

Tom, I will change codes only if it was only neccesary, because it will have to change many codes. If you could give me another alternative, I would appreciate it.

              Regards

              Milton
