Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Best folder location for a5v9 databases on C:\

Just installed a5v9 on my home ofc computer (upgraded from v6). Tomorrow I will install it on my laptop. I plan to create a database tonight for use at work, so I want to make it easy to copy what I create to my jumpdrive to then copy onto my laptop. First database will be just to enter/evaluate the results of a Donor Survey sheet I made that we started handing out today; I have 6 completed Surveys I can use as the test data.

My question is: Would I be better off creating a folder under C:\Program Files\a5v9\ to hold all my Alpha work, or would it be just as well to create a folder off the C:\ root drive to hold it? I don't know where Alpha puts all the files that accompany a database, so I am just worried about missing something important when copying from my home ofc computer to my laptop. If they'll all be in the same folder I select when I create the database, add records, modify, etc., then I'd rather have them all in a folder off C:\ drive.

    Many thanks in advance,
    Caely

    Hi Carol,

I would recommend you have a folder off the C: drive for each of your applications. What you dont want to do is mix your application with the Alpha program files.

In the future you might want to download a sample of an application just to learn how so a routine was done. These in terne would be extracted to a separate folder.

      Hello, Keith,

Thanks for your reply. I can make a folder called C:\XYZ Company\ and then add subfolders for each project, is that what you mean? Sounds good. Only if I want to use a table from one project in another project, how will I know which files comprise that table? Is there something in the a5v9 documentation that will tell me which files to copy to the new folder, in order make a complete copy of the original table?

Also, I did not really understand your second paragraph:

Maybe you could explain that part if you get a chance.

      Many thanks,
      Caely

All the files for a table will start with the name of the table. Same for a database.

          Hi Carol,

"C:\XYZ Company" would be for "XYZ Company" and "C:\ABC Company" would be for "ABC Company", NOT in a sub folder of any other company. Each application must be in its own folder and any sub folders would be for that application only.
Only if I want to use a table from one project in another project, how will I know which files comprise that table?
Robert has answered that. As usual there is more to it than that, whilst you can include a table from another folder, Alpha will give you a warning about doing that. If you do include a table from another folder and then move the application to another machine, the included tables would not get moved along with all the other files for that application.

The best way to do that is have Alpha zip the application, copy the zip file to jump drive and then get Alpha to do the restore on your laptop.

With regard to downloading samples and examples from other developers, this was to have in mind that you would need to keep those files separate from your projects.

Gee, you guys are Great! Thanks, Keith & Robert!! I now have all the info I need, to put this dbf on my jumpdrive & take it to work. I actually have now made the database, tables, and one set; entered the 7 data records I have and it's doing just what I wanted (after a few stumbles and puzzles were resolved). I also made two reports & printed them out to show my boss and the Big Boss, who'll be down here from New Jersey tomorrow.

Now it's nearly 1 a.m. here, and I'm gonna get a bite to eat, & call it a day. Thanks, y'all, for making my day end up being a good one!

            In appreciation,
            Caely

Re: Best folder location for a5v9 databases on C:\

I like to put my Databases in a folder called "Databases" under the "My Documents" Windows folder, this makes them very easy to find just press the start button then Documents (assuming you are using Vista).

Each separate database is stored in its own folder. I also backup my database regularly to a USB Drive using the Windows Briefcase backup facility - very easy to do and automatically keeps track of any files that change.

                Alastair,

Thanks for the tips, especially the one about Windows Briefcase. I'll have to look into that, for sure; sounds very helpful.
