Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Converting cm to inches, getting an error

I'm trying to store the "Standard" height and weight (5'10" and 160lbs, for instance) but most of the input will be in cm and kg. I am accepting input into a type-in field tied to a variable, and converting on departure from the field.

Weight is working, converting just fine. Height is another matter. I have the formula correct, but I'm having issues with the execution. While the expression editor shows that I have a valid expression, I'm getting an error when I actually try to use this.

I've recreated the problem at it's most basic using a table with just two fields (Height and Weight) and a form with the two variable input fields and the two table fields. The error says there are extra characters at the end. I can't find any! When I try to remove stuff, the expression becomes invalid. If I wrap the whole thing in an additional ALLTRIM, I get a different error -- Expected value.

Table and form in their own database are in the attached zip file.

I know I'm just doing something stupid, but I just can't figure out what it is. Rather than bang my head against it some more, I'm hoping fresh eyes will do the job that my eyes (and brain) refuse to do.

    Thanks!

' and " have special meaning in an expression and should be avoided. Even if you can use them, 5'10" is not a numeric value to be stored in the n_hgt variable (as it is dimensioned as numeric). 5'10" is a character value.

Numeric values will consist of 0123456789 although they may be formatted to display with decimal point, thousands separators, and currency symbols.
    There can be only one.

I'm storing it as a character string, not a numeric value. I have twenty years of such data in an old DOS-based database that I'm importing into this one when I have it working.

You're saying there's no way to do this?

Instead of your action script in the OnDepart use Inline Xbasic (an action script choice) and place this script in it. The action script is placing the incorrect syntax and most likely is a bug that should be reported.

          Code:
          parentform:Height.value = ALLTRIM(STR(INT(ROUND(n_hgt*0.3937,0)/12)))+"'"+ALLTRIM(STR(MOD(ROUND(n_hgt*0.3937,0),12)))+"\""

Got it to work as follows... you needed a \ after the feet number... but I couldn't get the inches to work correctly until I used a different part of Xbasic... the Chr() function... this works.

              ALLTRIM(STR(INT(ROUND(n_hgt*0.3937,0)/12)))+"\' "+ALLTRIM(STR(MOD(ROUND(n_hgt*0.3937,0),12))) + Chr(34)
