Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Stop automatic update when leaving record

I am new in Alpha5 DB development (A5v9) having come from MS Access 2000 developer edition.
My problem is that if a record is changed on a data entry form, in edit mode, and then moves to a new record before saving, (by tabbing or using the 'Enter' keyboard button), the change is automatically updated with no warning. If the close (X) button on the form is clicked, there is a 'Do you want to save' warning. I don't want the record to move out of focus until the changes are saved or cancelled with deliberate intention.
I cannot find anything in the menu item 'Settings' to force the Tabb/Enter to loop from the last field to the first field and remain on the same record thus forcing a deliberate save or cancel.
Unfortunately, the Alpha Five Sports demo has the same problem that I want to avoid.
Can you please point me in the right direction to solve this.

See Modal vs Modeless Data Entry.
    There can be only one.

      Neil,

Ondepart from the last field(or any field) you can do activateobject to set focus to whatever field you want. I do this repeatedly in my forms for the same reason you want.

I keep putting a local link instead of the web link.

Neil, an easy solution is to place another object on the layout, say a text box for a variable. Set this object last in tab order. Use the OnArrive event of the new object to run a script that sets focus (activates) the object that's first in tab order. Once its working correctly change the properties of the object so that it becomes invisible (no border, same color as form background). Easy as pie.

Thanks for your help Dave. I tried it but, although it did set focus to the first field on the form, it also updated the changed record without warning. It seems that the ondepart function automatically updates an edited record????? BTW I used action scripting - is that OK?

Thanks for your help Stan. I only use Modal data entry. I went to the URL which says:
                  --------------------------------------
                  Modal Data Entry Mode

                  In Modal data entry mode:

                  ....... etc etc

Pressing Enter or Tab in the last data field does not open a new record.

                  ........etc etc
                  ---------------------------------------

Whilst that last statement is correct - it doesn't open a new record - it does update any field changes without warning. This is not in keeping with the warning that it issued if you click the close X to close the form. By the time the form is closed, it is too late, the changed record has already been updated. So I really don't want focus to leave the field without a save/cancel warning.

Many thanks Tom. I followed your advice and it works perfectly.
