Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Form with browse problem

I have a form based on a set. The form has a browse based on the child. I do a number of actions that when creating a new record actually does the new record based on a template. It creates one new parent with multiple child records. The idea is that I only need to fill in yes/no/not applicable based on the child record question. the whole thing works fine and i end up viewing the one parent with multiple child records on a modless form

Now the problem is that when I am in the child record and set the yes/no/not applicable to yes/no or not applicable (text field with drop down) The view is refreshed and suddenly I get a child view based on the first parent record that has nothing to do the result while the parent is still correct.

    Hi Mark,

I have a very similar situation. When I enter records in the child fields, the data disappears when I tab to the next field. I will be watching this thread with keen interest.

      more to this

I note that when I enter the data, the join ID to the parent is actually changing to the same number as the first record in the parent set. This would mean that my script may not be populting the Join filed with the parent ID as I thought. I will follow this line at the moment

I can confirm my script is OK. I can also confirm that the ID Join field is being changed to the first parent record everytime, even though the view has been filtered to a different parent and the child records match. When the data is added it changed the ID and the browse is refreshed to a differenct parent ID

I have rebuilt - created new set, new form - just about every thing. I have
noted that the filter takes me to the view I want, but the moment I fill detail in teh brows the problem is still there. I have also noted that if ago to the view based on no filter and scrool through the parent records, all work fine.

It seems my problem related to moving from an xdialog button. Moving from the OK or Cancel works fine. Moving from an addition button does not. It does not seem to allow the view to properly refresh

              Mark (and Ken),
I have had similar issues and they were always due to something I did or didn't do---think at least one time it was my set linkage being incorrect for the situation. A sample is really the only way to get to the bottom of something like this--as you've noticed, no takers on the problem as not much to go by really.

I can confirm that my issue is directly related to additional buttons on an xdialog. Not sure if it is the coding I used for the button, but the xdialog does not close properly after it is clicked until all followon steps have been completed. As it is last to close it may have had some impact on the view at the end.

I have changed my strategy and done a work around. Typical - there is always some way, albeit a different one each time, to achieve the objective.

                  Re: Form with browse problem

Mark, I'm curious whether you've learned how to zip and upload a sample database to reply posts here? Being able to upload (attach) a zip file copy of a database is a really great feature of the message board, and helps others help you. It's also a good way to post examples that work. Doing this helps other "travellers" who find your message thread later on. When everyone does this the message board becomes a real "knowledge base". In this case I'm glad you've solved your problem, but this thread isn't going to be of much help to others down the line. Too bad. -- tom

                    Thanks Tom,

Yes I have zipped up before. didn't think this issue was going to merit it. In this case, I need to zap a lot personal data before sending.

As it stands my alternative approach is just as good. I do need to add the problem above was compounded by moving from one xdialog (which should have closed) to another, then on to the view with the criteria from the last dialog. It seems that none of the xdialogs would close until the end of script about three steps past where they are supposed.

Still really doesn't explain the original issue which was the changing of the join field id to the first record
