Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Document management application?

You have not given much detail, but this sort of thing is able to be done with xbasic but I am not aware of a sample database or code.
I used Alpha to do some fancy Word merging and then automatically save the document in a clients folder and make it readily available to re-open from within Alpha via a standard "File open" dialogue that started in the clients folder.

      Re: Document management application?

      Steve,

This would be really neat functionality.

But I think it would require the following:

      1. Hierarchical tree/grid control
      2. Drag and drop capabilities
      3. Horizontal and vertical splitter bars

Most such applications (evens Windows explorer) allow the navigation using a tree structure, and the better ones use a hierarchical grid which can display multiple fields and allow the expansion and collapse of individual folers.

No one on this forum has been able to satisfactorily explain to me why Alpha Five can not accomodate Drag and Drop. But how are you going to move a document from one folder to another easily?

Finally, if you display both the tree and the Word ro PDF document on the screen you probably would like to be able to enlarge or reduce the document display at will. You need a splitter bar like that found in MS Explorer or Outlook, but not available in Alpha Five. I've played with three different splitter bar ActiveX controls, all of which work with MS Access or Visual Studio, but you guessed it, none of them work with Alpha Five.

All of this functionality that is needed to build a capable document management application has been already added to the Wish list, some by me, some by others.

In my mind, document management should be a slam dunk capability just like email and calendaring/scheduloing. While there is a rather expenive third party Word viewer ActiveX control on the market, is is only one piece of the solution. 999.00 USD http://www.anydraw.com 999.00 USD)

        Re: Document management application?

Hi Bob, I agree with you I don't understand the lack of drag and drop as it is BASIC windows functionality. The lack of a REAL GRID also mystifies me. All in all I was disappointed in what we saw in desktop enhancements at the conference. I guess the "Cloud" is clouding their vision!

Alpha is stable and fast, but I think I need to explore other avenues. As we are a Law Firm, Browser based solutions are not an option.

Umm, I opening a can of worms here, but:

With A5v10, drag & drop can be done. I have an example using web-side tools. And, now that web-tools can be put on the desktop, well, you know.

As soon as I can, I want to build out the drag & drop example well enough that others can understand and use it.

Hi Steve, when you say WEB controls can be used on the desktop, are you referring to embedding the control in xdialog and embedding xdialog on a form? That seems more like a work around than a development paradigm. I am interested to see what you come up with.

I guess it depends upon how you look at it. Grid->xdialog->form is straightforward enough to my mind. Alpha is cleverly leveraging their web development effort and porting it to the desktop. Not a bad deal to my mind. If you think of traditional Alpha form constructs such as subform->form, form/conditional object, form by expression->form and browse by expression->form, those methods would typically not be thought of as "work arounds". By that measure, neither is embedding the former - to my mind anyway.

                Re: Document management application?

                Steve,

I am very much intrigued by your suggestion that V10 will support drag and drop.

Could you share with forum members a jing video of how you were able to move documents from one node to another node in a hierarchical tree a la Windows Explorer or Microsoft Outlook. Or sample code, etc.

In my mind this would be a real breakthrough.

I'm holding out for the "official" release of v10, but I did not have any success with a crude document management application I tried to build using V9.

All I was trying to do was emulate the behavior of some commercial applicaiton software. This is REAL WORLD functionality that Alpha needs to address. It seems to me that this is best treated like Alpha email, the basic functionality is in place and all you have to do is hook it up to your application.

If what you say is true, it is a MAJOR, MAJOR enhancement to Alpha Five.

                  Re: Document management application?

It just so happens that I have a small jing video I used to share this with a couple other consultants. This is crude stuff, no sound, and the targets aren't/don't look like folders, but with some work, I believe can be built into what's being discussed here.

Guess something just got put a little higher on my list of things to do.

I had to zip it to post it here because .swf isn't a valid extension for the upload manager on this board.

                  Enjoy.
