Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I don't see new empty records with either vers 8 or vers 9. Perhaps I am not following the same sequence as you. Please list step by step instructions for us to follow.

      Jack,

I have Packed the skill table and a new record was not saved when I clicked Exit without Submit first.

I did this both in V8 and V9.

So it seems you app should work OK in V9.

          Jack,
The initial record is due to the fact that whenever there is an empty table, that table automatically goes into "enter" mode (ready for the first record to be entered).

Not knowing the script behind your "New" button prevents any guess on why an additional record is being added at the end of your data entry--I will take a look at your sample..

LATER EDIT: I cannot replicate the issue of a record being created as you have done.

When on the Skill Listing form I just noticed that if focus is shifted to the Skill Description field, you are then able to navigate beyond the last record, creating a new blank record. This also occurs in version 8 so may not be part of this issue but certainly an issue.

I just get a bunch of errors in the submit code (can't find table, and expected values, etc).

                Mike,
You have to add the table from the Data folder as the sample's dbf is actually not in the v8 or v9 folders.

Re: Empty Row Create Automatically Compare V8 and V9

I believe I can duplicate the problem described above. In V9 blank records seem to be added when you are in enter mode (new record) and press the exit key. These blank records show up not in the form but in the default browse. What I find interesting is when you view the table with the default browse in V9 you see blank records. When you view the same file in V8 there are no blank records. I packed the table in V9. It made no difference. V8 and V9 display the same file (default browse) differently.

Doug the number of records in the table can be checked easily using the table's statistics. Do vers 8 & vers 9 see the same number of records?

Tom, I closed both version and went to lunch. Now both versions are showing the same table (default browse) with blank reocrds as seen earlier in V9. Later I'll try to duplicate the situation.

Re: Empty Row Create Automatically Compare V8 and V9

I haven't been able to duplicate the problem I described above. I continue to see the issues Jack described. The difference appears to be the actions taken when the the Exit button is pushed in the Skill Form. If the description field is blank V8 cancels the blank record v9 saves the empty record. It would appear the events initiated when the exit button is pushed are handled differently by these versions.

To achieve these result I would make two new entries then choose to make a third entry then with a blank field shown (description) press the exit button. Use the default browse for tbl_skill, the empty records will be visible.

Interestingly, the last record entered in V8 isn't visible until the table has been packed, V9 doesn't require this action.

There is another problem with the forms. This is the same issue in both versions. Initially, if information for two records is entered into the skill form data is saved to the first and third records. The second record saved has empty fields. This issue doesn't seem to happen with subsequent entries.

In V9 change the action in your exit event on the Skill form from topparent.cancel() to topparent.delete_record() Be sure to test first to verify the description field is empty!

                          I didn't try this in V8.

                            Million thanks for everyone.

At least now you can see the problems I face.

I thought my PC has problem and I format my pc and reinstall everything again and download the lastest V9 also show me the empty record.

But now I meet one more problem, sometime when I click Exit, the whole system hang..... and I need to restart again. I use other pc to do the work and something happen again.

Do AlphaFive H&D has any way to solve the problem?
                            Many Thanks.
