Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Printing in leters

    Hello,
I am trying to print a fill in the form letter directly from the form if possible or would like to put a button there so that it would fill in the blanks in the form and then I could print it out in Alpha.
Not sure where to begin to look.
I have a lot of letters that will be mail merge that it would be best to do it from within Alpha so have to get good at this.

Anyone know how to press a button and the letter prints.

Also, I already have prepared the letters so they are ready to go.

    Thanks for any help.

    Re: Printing in leters

You are not giving enough information or giving misinformation that is confusing to me.

Where have you already prepared these letters? Word? Alpha report? where?

Do you have fields set up on your form with all the information??

You can print an Alpha report/letter/label eadily from a form to just print one letter or a lot.

You can also mail merge with word, but I never found it necessary since Alpha does letters so well.

Give us an idea so we can help you?

      Re: Printing in leters

Hello Dave, and thanks for response.

I hope I am clearer - I have letters prepared in the Letters Tab right in Alpha Five.

Now, I want to be able to do a merge and just click and fields from the current record will be merged and I can print out a letter.

      Thank you for your help.

      Bruce

        Re: Printing in leters

Still not enough info - at least for me! If you already have "prepared" the letters in Alpha then they should already be attached to the proper tables and the record selection should have already been set. So if all that is done, what is it that you are trying to do with them? You should be able to click on the icon in the Letter tab and get the desired results. Do you?

You are using the term "merge" which leads me to think that you are attempting to look at this as something you do with a word processor. The instructions in the help are pretty straight forward so I might suggest you have a quick look at that and then post back here with a few more details.

          Re: Printing in leters

          Bruce,

I think you wish only the current record print(the one you are in)? You can set the on push for the button to do this with action scripting. Hopefully your fields are in the letter already, but you can add them if not.

          to print a letter/report/etc choose:

          reports
          print a layout
Choose layout (click the "only for current table/set)
Next will give you options and you may choose: " records that match a control in the current form"

Further, I suggest you have something on the letter(hidden maybe) to designate which record on print.

          Did this help you?

          .
