Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Having trouble duplicating record

I need to duplicate a record in a form that contains an embedded browse. I have been successful at duplicating the record and it's information within the form but when I go to the new record, I can see that the record in the browse was not duplicated.

I have tried a bunch of different things in action scripting but none are working.

How can I duplicate the form record as well as the browse record by clicking a button on the form?

    Thanks!!!

When creating the action script did you

optionally select whether you are working with the form ( Parent Level ) or with an Embedded Layout.
    There can be only one.

I chose Parent Level. Also, this form is based on a set.

        Joe,

If you choose Parent Level the action scripting will ignore the child table and duplicate the parent record - as you have found. If you choose with an Embedded Layout you should get a duplicate of the parent and at least the first listed child in the browse.

Never used this so I'm not sure.

Does the same thing using Parent or Embedded. If the curser is in a field in the browse and the button is pushed, it will duplicate the record that the curser is on. If I put the curser in a field within the form, it will duplicate the form record but no browse info.

              Re: Having trouble duplicating record

It's may not be the neatest approach but you can place two 'duplicate record' actions in a row - one to duplicate the child record in the browse that currently has focus and the other to duplicate the parent that has focus. I would duplicate the child record first followed by the parent. The inefficiency is that I believe A5 will generate two identical messages (that require user input to close)regarding the focus being placed onto the duplicate records created. There may be a way to suppress those messages, but I haven't investigated.

                Re: Having trouble duplicating record

Joe, in Alpha Five your set based form contains records from two tables, not a single record with fields from two records. I think the approach you're taking is limited to duplicating a single record at a time, so I like Douglas' suggestion.

                  Re: Having trouble duplicating record

I'm sorry... I should have been more clear when explaining what I need.

I have a record that displays on the form. Within the form there is a browse with multiple records associated to the current record on the form. I want to make an exact duplicate of the current record on the form, auto increment the id_no, make exact copy of all records within browse and have the new incremented id_no from the new form record linking the new form record to the new browse records.

I hope this is a better explanation.

Much clearer what you want. Thoroughly explained with sample code here, chapter 36 if I remember.
